Gem Tang ripped its fin!

I have only had him 2 days and this morning I noticed his fin is torn. There are 2 other Zebras that were added at the same time. I have not seen them fight once. All 3 swim and school together and eat and pick at the rocks together. They all eat well. I Have a feeling he did it in a tight spot in the rocks over night.

I don't thing I could catch it if I had to. Will it heal?

yes looks like a clean split ,amazing how fast they heal.. :)

Just keep on eye out for white fuzz or redness around the area those are signs of infection

My desjardini rips his fins like that all the time. They always heal in a few days

Same I have a sail fin that does the same. They heal incredibly fast

This is no doubt from aggression and the culprit is the purple tang. I have both and the very split is from my purple (never happened until the purple was introduced).
One great thing about saltwater is the ability of fish and invertebrates to heal naturally and quickly on their own without additives.
Water quality and diet play a role on the healing process.

This and I don't have a purple tang for this reason, as soon as I saw the purple in the pic I thought "that solves that then." ;)

my yellows fin got torn from being netted at the lfs, within a week, all healed up

It will heal quickly unless the ray is broken. The ray I am taking about is the one that is caudal to the split, with some white showing. If that ray is broken, the tank will have crooked dorsal fin for a long time, or forever. Look closely and hope that the ray is not broken.

I does not look as though the ray is broken. I will get better pics later.

Astonishing. Fully healed! It was a long rip. All I can see now is about a 1-2 mm split were it was. I was a little worried.

If no tissue is missing, it will really heal quickly. If the tissue is missing, it take a while to grow back.

Fish fins can heal at an incredible rate, when given the right conditions. One time I bought a firefish from petco that had a torn caudal fin, and within an hour of being introduced to my tank, it completely healed up. I was impressed.
