Always searching for new ideas. I was talked into buying a 5 gallon saltwater tank at a mom and pop shop about a year ago. I caught the coral bug and now I'm hopelessly hooked. I'm looking at getting a bigger tank but don't really want the hassle. So for now I'll keep looking and reading. Long story short, with a 15-20 gallon tank, what type of equipment do I actually need? Ie, skimmer etc?

Welcome to R2R! Weekly consistent water changes are pretty much all you need ;) RoDi unit, lighting, and a good water change schedule :)

Welcome to R2R! I agree with the above. I good water change schedule and pure, quality water are your best friends on a small system. I would recommend an ATO (auto top off) as well to help the small system's stability.

The least amount of equipment is probably a heater and water pump to stir the water and a light. clean RODI water and live rocks. And test kits for ammonia, nitrites nitrates, pH, calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, and phosphate. A refractometer is a must, but i would consider a ATO (auto top off) for evaporated water.

Thank you all im pretty much on track with your recommendations. My priority is not getting bogged dowm with maint tasks. I just vot a small RODI which will make plenty of water for ny needs. Hoping to see a change from the wster store RO water.

Regular water changes, a light and heater, live rock and a water pump and also a ATO. I ran a 20g tank this way for a year with no problems. Nothing fancy but it did fine.
