is there any handheld algae scraper that uses regular blades (i.e. utility knife blades)? or some some blades that's readily available in big box stores. i have tried flipper and tunze, just can't seen to get some really stubborn algae of the glass.

Something like this may be an option. We use a similar item at work and they are intended for plastic blades, but a standard metal one looks like it would fit.

Doesn’t the Tunze have a blade option that you can attach?

Yes, and it works great for me.

Actually I just did a search and the Tunze ships with a metal blade attachment. Here is the review.
