Hawaii Fish Ban Update

What do you believe they should be offering them for? What price is fair to you?
Like I said thats my personal opinion. I know what I'll pay for a yellow tang, and it's less than $165 lol

I'm just a casual observer, I don't know what's going on in collection, distribution etc.
But, in the past 2-3 years I've seen comparably sized(1-2") purples go from $250 down to 75 at the lowest, and similarly Tiny Gems go from like 500+ to ~250.
Prices obviously fluctuate, but the overall trend I'm seeing appears downward for those wild zebras.
But for the past 3 years, Yellows have been the same price, ~165 for the 1.25" ones

I'm hopeful that when Hawaii opens, competition brings prices down for all of us.

This guy shot and killed 3 orange shoulder tangs for 1 persons meal.

I don’t know, I think Hawaii needs to ban spearfishing too.. dws

Any news of Hawai reopen ??

What’s the word?!?!
Just heard back an hour ago. Unfortunately, this is stalled but in the works.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources is currently working on developing rules for aquarium harvest, which should facilitate the permitting process. However, given that the rulemaking process requires public hearings and responses to public comments, it’s difficult to provide a timeframe for permit issuance. This is a contentious issue, so it could take another 4-months and even up to under a year.
This is not what any of us wanted to hear but its reality and all we can do is sit tight.
So much for hope

Hello,

Really appreciate you keeping us all in the loop about Hawaii!

Just curious — do you think there’s a chance they’ll add more species to the approved list down the road?

Would love to hear any rumors or info you might have. Thanks a ton!

Adding more would be hopeful but I’m also doubtful taking what we have experienced thus far

By the way, I saw that President Trump recently reopened some protected marine areas in Hawaii for fishing (April 2025).

Do you think this decision could help speed up the process for allowing more aquarium species to be collected?

Or is it still unrelated for now?

I believe unrelated. We are talking fishing versus collection
