Hawaii Fish Ban Update

I'm not sure that is the correct terminology for what my post was saying.

Maybe, maybe not. As I read "The days of $20 yellow tangs are gone" it leads me to think of it as both emotion and price disappointment. Then again the days are long gone of $0.79 cent for a gallon of gas or a buck for a Big Mac or whatever item price point in time.

The good news is that some fish are still available if one so chooses. Hobbyist has to decide.

They are gone as well as they should be, whether or not that is lamenting or not IDK. The price "gouging" is more what I was talking about. I think the first couple years is going to be rough if you want something from that area. Whether its a yt or some other fish. It may be better to just get a tank bred yt for the foreseeable future if you want one. Obviously not all Hawaii's fish are captive bred so if ya want one you will be at "their" mercy.

I can't speak for you but I have no idea if it is price gouging or not as I do not know the effort that goes into bringing new marine fish to market let alone the Yellow Tang. Looking at cached prices for the initial batch that was sold prices ranged from $99 USD for blemish, $150 USD for average quality, and $200 USD for the best available. They are somewhat cheaper today at $185 USD direct from Biota. So cheaper and improved quality isn't too bad.

I do not own a Yellow nor do I have much interest as I already have a Scopas. I do, however, own a Milletseed Butterflyfish that is captive bred and feel it is the Bee's Knees. Of course it is a personal preference.

Maybe the two will intersect when things are lifted. I guess we will find out not that it matters today.

The fishery will reopen soon. We are not banned, but not permitted yet. The court order that started this entire saga has been completed and satisfied for years. The administrators that have overly involved themselves in this process have been stalling and purposefully slow walking it despite everything being complete and the recommendations from our resource managers and scientists. Despite all this, we have finally worked our way through the list of excuses and there are no more games to play.These administrators have been holding us back in violation of the law expressed by our legislators. This entire thing is much deeper than just yellow tangs, it’s corruption. A rules package has been initiated by our resource managers and they are taking this to the Land Board very soon. This will begin a short process of meetings and decision making and hopefully at the end the fishery will be open soon. If not, the violation of law will be explored in the courts

Yes, just on the west coast of the big island, there’s over 7 million yellow tangs. These estimates are grossly underestimated since the adults in the shallows are hard to count since they’re so mobile and in the waves. Realistically, we probably have north of 10 million on West coast and 15 million for the whole island

I agree and I hear the other side of the island has thousands.

There are definitely benefits to the bans tho, I have seen reefs destroyed by overcollection, so unless we can do it responsibly, I am against reopening Hawaii.

That said, I would like us to be able to get healthy potter's leopards again, and maybe the prices on bandit angels would go down...

Not to be argumentative, but where have you seen reefs destroyed by overfishing for aquariums?

Surely not Hawaii. I know of no place this has occurred in the world and have been involved with this activity commercially for 20 years

My initial thought would be indonesian coral exportation. But my main point is that if love of these animals is the point of this hobby. Why would we be mad that the state is protecting those species? If collection can be done responsibly, then I am all for it.

Just so everyone understands, RT is on a different island, with a different group of fishers with different issues. The fishery is different, the science is different, and the state of the process is different too. We support each other in the sense that we all catch fish but we also have limited knowledge on what each island is doing

Aww, I see. So fisheries for fish is much different than coral harvesting. Indonesia never had a resource issue, in fact the opposite is true. They have more coral than one can imagine. The impact from the associated trade is hardly even traceable. What happened there was political in nature where a new lady was seated that was in charge of AKKII and permits/licenses.

I appreciate the desire for hobbyists love and concern of the ocean and that connection is the purpose of why we do what we do, but all to often hobbyists don’t get to see for themselves how things actually work and this gap of knowledge and understanding is exploited by others who wish to spread misinformation for their own reasons.

Like your name btw, leopards are one of my favorite fish and I always enjoy watching potters wrasse when I’m in the water. Very special genus

Thanks! Leopards are so cool! They somehow all manage to be astounding, beautiful, and unique, while also being peaceful, and can live in harems. Its amazing. Like I said, I would love to get a potter's if hawaii reopens, they are definitely one of my all time favs.
