I have an Innovative Marine Nuvo Fusion 40 aio. It has exactly 31.5 gallons of water. I use an Eheim 75watt ThermoControl-E heater that is rated for 15.8-26.4 gallons. It heats my tank just fine. It takes about 20-25 minutes to get up to temp. You can see my log below. The heater is set to turn on at 77.8 and off at 78.3 degrees. Our ambient temperature in the house is 75 degrees.
The 100 watt version of my heater is rated for 27.4-39.6 degrees. I tried to use this heater but it is too long for the rear chamber of the aquarium.

My question is, is my heater doing it’s job or is it working too hard?

I’ve looked at the IM Helio heaters and controller and with those heaters my tank would require 200watts. How can this be? I know it’s a different technology, but that is a major difference. The 200 watt Helio would cover 25-50 gallons.

Edit: I should mention the heater clicks on 6-7 times per day throughout the night. It’s barely ever on throughout the afternoon hours.

What do you all think?

If not running continuously and maintaining temperature, I wouldn’t worry about it with useable volume with rock in tank- you probably have about 28 gallons

You’re good but make sure you have alerts set up for out of range conditions. If you kept the ambient room temp in the high 60s like many do in the winter months you may would see a little more struggle. If it’s working I’d leave it alone, plus I’d rather it have to turn in less often and run a little longer than I would the opposite.

Everything is set up in Hydros. So far has never been out of range. I’m in Florida so AC is always pumping at 75. Any idea why those IM heaters have crazy high wattages?

Most 200 watt say “up to” 75… they are likely giving a more realistic sizing of heater need compared to the average indoor temp VS desired water temp for the average tank owner across the nation.
