Hello all. Noob here looking for advice

Hello everyone, thanks for having me. I have a 90 gallon tank and 30 gallon tank to be used as a sump. I have had small fresh water tanks in years past but finally am making the jump into salt. I would love some recommendations on equipment or protein skimmer, filter, heater etc…. Trying to research which is best is giving me a headache! I do eventually want to move into corals so would rather find equipment now that will be good for when I get to that point. Thanks in advance guys and gals!!

Welcome to Reef2Reef!!! A sump is essentially a glass box to put stuff that would otherwise clutter up your display tank. What you keep in your display tank may help to determine what to put in your sump. This will often include some type of mechanical filtration (such as filter socks/filter cups/filter roller, etc.) and skimmer. This can also be a place for your heater and other equipment. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Give us an idea what your thoughts are for stocking and what your goal is for coral and we will be able to recommend some stuff. I would also encourage you to read some build threads to get some ideas about what other people with similar goals and setups have used.

Welcome to R2R. Smart move to plan for future builds which happens once u get the reef bug. U can check the marketplace for some used quality equipment or buy new depending on budget. Sumps are great like @Peace River said to store heaters skimmer s and return pump. All I have in mine I’d chk some threads or vids on reef gear relating to lighting flow and filtration. U can always add dosers and other stuff when the tank matures will need supplements other then a water change, if u decide to do them. Good luck

Welcome! There are lots of choices of equipment. Watch Bulk Reef Supply Videos on YouTube on all things reefing. Check build threads here and ask if owner is happy with what he /she bought. Reef Octopus, Sicce and Tunze are good vendors imo. Buy Inkbird controllers for dual heaters. Get a ground probe too.

No lights yet. I’m still at the very beginning stage here, literally just have the tank and stand.

Thanks for the response. As far as stocking, I would eventually like to have both hard and soft corals. Fish wise if I know I’m limited to certain fish due to sizes of tank. Ideally maybe an angel, a butterfly, clown, eel if he’ll play nice…

Thanks for the responses and the welcome, i appreciate it. I’ll check out the build threads and try to get a better idea of what I want in the tank. So much more involved than my old freshwater tanks!!

Welcome, i would suggest coming up with a plan of what you want to keep eventually and buy equipment as if you are already there. Buy the best equipment you can afford as it will save you money down the road. Pay attention to who gives you advise, a lot of the newer reefers just want to throw technology at everything and sometimes all you need is patience and some old school methods, a reef doesn't happen overnight and you will learn to appreciate the entire process. I'm an old fart and have tried most approaches in the hobby, patience is key over everything, enjoy yourself.
