Long time fish lover. Second time saltwater owner and much older and hopefully wiser.

When I was 16 I had a 90 gallon saltwater that over a year never really got it down.

However its been ten years and im trying again!

Ive also learned the value of online forums from my other hobby. Military surplus [imperial russian militaria]

Well here we go. I recently took a visit to ThatFishPlace which is local to me and convinced myself to get back into saltwater.

I ended up with a nice 30 gallon tank with a cover and stand.

Marine land 24 inch reef LED strip light. Aqueon flow quietflow 55/75.

Some coarse substrate, a bag of live sand and about 24 pounds of live rock.

Also picked up the small stuff. Heater, buckets.... Cleaners. Test kits and such

I have the tank set up and basically im second guessing my filtration setup. The salesman told me this would be fine for a small reef setup. However I feel this type of filter was frowned apon by every other source I read.

What I was thinking about looking into was they self these almost inclosed bucket like filter systems that sit below the tank. Basically like the open systems you see under larger tanks with the coarse sponge that then goes to the plastic balls that hold the benificial bacteria... Then the fine sponge that leads to a return pump. A sump?

Any recommendations? I also feel a protein skimmer is a must.... However i was also told this was unneeded

Is there any all in one under tank system that doesnt require drilling holes in my tank?

Or would I be looking at a small hang in protein skimmer and this filter or another?

Also it might be important to know I do plan to get some eady to maintain corals and inverts.

Sorry for the noob questions!
