I’ve had fresh water tanks for a long time. Cichlids mainly. Decided to move to a larger tank 155 bow front,with a sump system. Staying with cichlids for now and getting used to managing the tank with the sump system.
With that said, I’m upgrading the lights. Any suggestions to get the best colors that’s great to go from fresh to eventually a reef tank? good quality color, penetration for coral growth/and lunar mimic.

Mostly depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to grow.
As a new Sw reefer I would say start slow...get it dialed in for awhile then upgrade when your knowledge and comfort has increased.

Back when I was a teen I had a plan to start a cichlid tank but never got around to it. The colorations in some specimens is jaw dropping. I wouldn’t mind some pics of your set up!

Welcome from Monmouth County! I’d suggest trying to pick up a used T5 fixture by ATI. You can get all the parts from ATI and it won’t break the bank at all. Just new bulbs every 12 or so months.
