Life Update- Had A Waterbox 220.6 up and running for a couple years and loved it. Had a 75 gal before that. We decided we wanted to move closer to family but we were going to live in a spare trailer on my in-laws property for a year while our new house was being built so sold the Waterbox. We decided we wanted to downsize homes so one of the cuts was an area for a large fish tank. First time in 6-7 years that I no longer had a fish tank. Now we have been in our new home for 1.5 years and got hit with wanting a tank again. No great spot in living room and didn't want to put in bedroom so decided a small tank on my office/gaming desk was best option. Saw Hello Reef was an almost complete package on youtube so decided to pull the trigger yesterday. 2026 year of the great return

Picked up the Hello Tank and (3) pre mixed 4.3 gal saltwater from Chewy. The tank was still discounted and in stock there so that's why I bought it from them. As of now my plan for RO or RODI water is to get jugs from Walmart/Kroger.

Next up was my Bulk Reef Supply order, I ordered the Simplicity 10-gal Easy Fill ATO Reservoir, Nature Dimensions N-Clear Nano Fleece Roller, couple extra rolls, N-Clear Hello Reef adapter, Piranha Float Plus and Saltwater Liquid Master Test Kit. The ATO reservoir was expensive but went ahead and got it because it was narrow and large. It will be under my desk so it needed to fit and I liked the easy pour feature. I did not know how much evaporation I will have but 10 gal will last longer than 5. We go on 7 day cruises a few times a year so needed something to last. With the Waterbox knowledge I know I did not like changing filter socks. Filter rollers seems pretty cool so going to try it out. If a roll can last 4-6 weeks between changing I will be happy. Had the same glass cleaner brand Algae Free in old tank and I know I won't be removing it from tank each time so just got the smallest option

Next up was Premium Aquatics order. Out of stock on BRS so I got the Tunze Osmolator 3 Nano. Had a Tunze before and was great.

Next up my Amazon order. Having a smart surge protector/power strip was very nice on last tank so why change a good thing. Went with same as before, Kasa 6 outlet. Other thing i bought was Dr Tims ammonium chloride. Of course doing a fishless cycle and did not want to do the food decay thing.

Last thing I ordered was a Kraken Reef lid w/ feed hole. No fish any time soon but 3-4 week delay so wanted that to be in process. I added 1 cutout for the powerhead on left side

The only thing left to get is an automatic feeder. Had an Eheim before and it did work but leaning toward Avast Plank Mini. Could be sales pitch but seems they deliver more accurate feedings??

My goal for inhabitants is 3 fish, 1 cleaner shrimp, urchin and CUC. I definitely want to add either a picasso, snowflake or gladiator clownfish. Other tanks I've only had the basic so wanted to splurge a little. Last fish undecided

Most likely will add some zoas or LPS in tank but thats a ways out

In my Pauly D from Jersey Shore voice….”The tank is here!”. Now starting aquascape. Ordered more putty from Amazon and should get in Wednesday. Ammonia source will get in Thursday

Think I’m pretty happy with this design. Plenty of caves and openings so flow should be good. I’m going to have it off-centered for more depth visually

I’m also going to try and follow this route. Watched his BRStv and he has had great success doing this. Going to use 80% of the sand I got from kit and I’m closed enough to beach to grab some “live Gulf of Mexico sand”. It looks like the sand is more crushed shells/rocks so kids will just so happen to bring home a couple cups full

Got few more items in yesterday so tank is filled! Put 80% of the included arg-live sand and moved my rock structure in. Filled up with saltwater and have the return pump, heater, and power head on. Lights off. Ammonia source is coming in Thursday and getting the gulf shells/sand same day so thats when cycle will start. Have filter sock installed so any debris thats floating around will catch it. Will take it out when cycling

Question about this, I am basically in the same place and did the same thing, but I haven't removed the filter sock. Does that impede the cycling process? Everything is settled and clear so I suppose I don't need it anymore.

and following along!

From what I watched you just don't want the good bacteria forming on the sock because you will keep removing it. Pretty sure I saw someone mention it in a YT video but I don't think there is any harm in leaving it in. I think it was in the official Hello Reef series

Setup the ATO and calibrated the heater last night. It ran a couple degrees too warm.

Also struck out at the beach today so having to call an audible on a big part of the strategy. We will see how much this affects the uglies. Dropped 60 drops of Dr Tim’s Ammonium Chloride which brought it to 2.0 ppm so now the party begins

Might be worth getting an Inkbird or something for the heater if you'd like some peace of mind that your tank won't get cooked in the event your heater goes rogue. Welcome back, and good luck!

Seems like you're going first-class, and you definitely know what you are doing. Fish-stocking choices will be the real challenge. If you do get a Clown, I'd save up and buy the one you really, really want. (Hopefully will be a 20-year purchase! 😂) I like the designer black & white variety-- although I saw a yellow one... I think a "Golden Nugget" or something like that. Best wishes-- keep the photos coming.

Can definitely do this cheaper than what I’m doing haha. But in my life I go by “buy once, cry once”. So far it has served me well. Checking out the closest fish store to me today to see what they carry. Hopefully it turns out good where I don’t have to order CUC and fish online

Likely they can special-order you the fish you want. Depending on how close you live, you can even ask them to let you get the fish within an hour after they do, and ask them to keep it in the bag from the shipper. That way it never hits their local holding tank, and you cut out one more chance for disease.

Water parameter check-in: 2.5 days and looks like ammonia still at 2. Checked nitrite just to see if anything registers and it’s 0. Looks like evaporation will be about 1 gal a week

Just a couple pics with light on for a photo. Need to adjust power head where it doesn’t dig up the corner

you should start a build thread. Can use it like a journal for tank progress
