Apex probes are not always exact, even when new. I calibrate mine with a NIST certified thermometer every month or so just to keep it on target.

As far as actual room temp, it doesn't appear that it's very hot in your area today so that seem unlikely, unless you have a heater or stove going at home.

Unfortunately there's not a lot to check until you get home today and can review things in person. Can you share your heater code? Here's the code I use on our tank:

Fallback OFF
If Tmp < 79.4 Then ON
If Tmp > 79.8 Then OFF
If Tmp < 65.0 Then OFF
If Output Maint = ON Then OFF

My neighbor went in, controller read 88. Something is screwy. I had him unplug apex and heaters. Everything off except vortechs. Will be home at 3 to hopefully figure something out. It is heating up way to fast.

I got ahold of the owner and she cam in for me. Tank's temp with hanna temp is 80. Chaeto got into skimmer and return pumps. Apex probe somehow is out of water and BRS temp probe came unstuck and next to skimmer that was overheating. Everything is turned off except for the MP40 and MP10. Took small heater from other tank with only mangroves and put it in the DT and put a box fan blowing at top of water. Lots of agitation. Should be good until 11pm when I can get home and clean all the pumps. Fish look a little stressed but I hope they will be ok. Anything else I can or should do?

summertime in NY no ac in the living room where tank is, it's common for it to reach 83 84 degrees.
the fans and power heads is a good move.

when you get home to clean those pumps it might not be a bad idea to drain the sump water and replace with fresh, depending on how long it has been stagnant.

when you get back running completely, verify the apex is reading temperature accurately if is not, this is the calibration procedure from apex manual.

Probe Calibration
The temperature probe typically doesn’t need to be calibrated (see below). Leave what looks like a cap on it, plug
it into the base module and it will begin reporting your temperature immediately. However, if you suspect it is
inaccurate you can calibrate it against a known reference (Neptune recommends using a thermometer that’s ‘NIST
(National Institute of Standards and Technology) Traceable’, available on the web for under $60). Calibrate using
Setup → Temp Setup → Temp Calibrate using tenths of a degree +/- to add/subtract to whatever reading it has.
Before you do this however, remember there’s a difference between accuracy and resolution. While the
temperature probe has a resolution of 1/10th a degree, it only has an accuracy of +/- ½ degree.

Thanks. I calibrated it when I first it up, about a month ago. Both it and the BRS controller drift a little bit up and down. My fuge light tipped over and pulled the Apex probe up out of the water. It is on my to o list to hang the light securely this weekend, which means Wednesday for me. Now all I have to do is just deal with the box of dead CUC sitting in post office for me. Not a fun day but I will make it through.
