hello Guys,

Im a relatively new reefer and am currently at the setup of my 1st tank.

Atm for inhabitants i have got CUC and a ZOA Colony and a BTA.

I have the new Maxspect RSX Fixture with 4 Channels and am currently wondering if my Setting is fine.

Ill add a picture with the RSX Channel spectrums in case u are not familiar with them.

For Channel A(White) i go from 0-60%
Channel B(Blue) goes to 80%
Channel C(Deepblue ) goes to 80% aswell
AndChannel D(Red/green/white) goes to 20%

I Ramp them up over 2 hours then theres 12h daylight and 2 hours dawn again. Also i use 1% deepblue for the night.

I hve had quite an algae bloom lately. I used way more white and red/green back there cause the maxspect preset was that way.

Id appreciate feedback to my lighting schedule aswell as criticism. I hope to reduce algae groth by reducing red/green light.

Algae growth is more often a product of new, immature, and low biodiversity at the microscopic level, rather than lighting. You can have a catastrophic hair algae outbreak under royal blue LEDs on a low setting if the tank is young enough. That being said, I’d mimic the ecotech ab+ setting as closely as I can and put all blue and violet channels at 100% and all white red and green at 25% and hang the light as high over the tank as you can. It’s a proven light profile

As high as possible over the tank means at the ceiling? Dont i lose immense amounts of intensity by adding space?

Thanks for your reply!

Lol well not THAT high. 18” if you can stand the light spill. That will allow you to run the blues and violets at 100%. It’ll increase light spill but also blend the colors and spread better. If you have access to a par meter just turn the blues and violets up to 100 and the white green and red to 25, and adjust the height to hit 350 par throughout the rock work

Run you b and c the same or at 100%
Reduce you A channel to 30% and run only for 5.5 hour and you algae will settle down.
Your d could come down a bit also to 10 to 15%

Im afraid theres not enough spare cash to get a parmeter soon. Maybe i can borrow one from a lfs. The maxspect rsx should be decent but sure is no high end fixture. It was 520€ for the 200w which suits a 3 foot tank. As far as i coult tell from the description it peaks at about 200par in the center(see picture attached)

5,5 hours of daytime and the rest ramping up? I mean id still like some light for most of the day. Also as far as i understood that right its normal to get an algae bloom after cycling. Arnt 5,5 hours too short for my corals?

Thanks for the help!

Just run the whites for 5.5 hours total. Run the rest for 12 hours. Yes it is natural to have blooms after a cycle and you will continue to have blooms in your system even a old system will have blooms.

The reason I am suggesting 5.5 hour of white is I was having blooms and cyano out breaks constantly until I changed my white spectrum from 8hour at 50 % then to 30% to 5.5 hours and all of my algae issue went away in a week and are not back. :)

Lets settle things here with replicating the coral lab AB+ light program on the Maxspect RSX. Based on what I'm reading, I should be setting and focusing on channels B & C at ~100%. A at 30% and D at 15%. Can anybody confirm these values.

From my point of view (still a rookie, 8 months in the hobby now) its a total success. I did end up running blue and deep blue at 100%, and the red green channel on 5% or less. For whites i started at 30% and increased to about 50% because i liked the looks of it better.

I have about 50 or o corals in my tank, ranging from softies to many lps aswell as plenty of sps. Only 2 acros atm but growth and coloration are really good.

Ill add some pictures.

Tl;dr i would recommend replicating the coral lab AB+ programm.

Thanks for that, I too think the whites (ch1) need to be atleast that high ... far too blue otherwise. Also the reds (ch4) on the presets seem way too high to me (the LPS settings is 54% ch4/red).

What are the dimensions of your tank? I have the RSX 200w on an 80g (i.e. just 16 inch depth) mounted on the legs, so not sure if 100% on blues is too high for me. I guess I can start low and slowly work up.

I have a 65g but the 200w is almost too big for my tank. And yes, 100% will be too much on the stand thats invluded. I only increased after buying a hanging kit. I have it about 50cm above the surface.

Ok thanks I will just scale it back for now. I'd like to avoid the hanging kit if I can ... have some shade on the ends of my tank but I like how that looks, and can probably put some softies there

Do u use a hanging kit or what came in the package.

I would recommend the hanging kit and the hang the fixture about 20 inches above the tank. (Then u can set the fixture to higher percentages and the light blends better)

For starters this works well for me:

You wann have maximum values of:

Blue and deep blue at about 80-100%

White at about 30-60%(this is mostly preference, how it looks good to you)

And only about 0-5% one the red/green channel.

I would do abot 6 hours of max intensity(see above) and about 1-3 hours of ramping up in the morning and in the evening.

In total u wanna have a max of 12h light with 6 hours max intensity.

Over the night you can turn the light off or use 0,0,0 and 1% dark blue for a nice moonlight effect.

Feel free to ask further questions!
