I kept a reef tank throughout undergrad. This year I've set one up in my classroom as a group project for my middle school students with disabilities. So far, so good (we cycled successfully and are maintaining inverts with 0 ammonia/nitrate/nitrite spikes). We did try to add a molly, but it disappeared over a weekend, which seemed very X-Files. I assume it died and then met our very efficient CUC. We are pondering our next addition -- needs to be hardy and not break the bank, which is to say my bank, because I'm paying for all creatures out of pocket.

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

If you want some suggestions on what fish to add, you might want to create an additional thread as this one is going to be mostly welcome messages.

The community will also need the tank size so an appropriate fish can be suggested :)

WELCOME!!!!

Hope you and your students have a blast learning and succeeding.

Fish advice would be better served over in the Fish threads.

Best of luck, and keep posting. Pictures are always welcome!

Oh wow -- thank you for the super kind greeting!

Our specs are pretty basic. We have a Fluval EV0 13.5 gallon with supplemental heating and additional biological filtration in the space that's supposed to be occupied by a protein skimmer. We started out with the drop-in Fluval skimmer but they keep breaking, which is infuriating. Substrate is 80% crushed coral and 20% live sand from TBS; live rock is about five pounds, also from TBS. They are amazing. We have a rich, diverse invert community with hermit crabs, at least three types of snail, tube worms, coraline algaes, sea stars, various mollusks, a sea urchin, etc. etc. etc. My students love to grab a chair and watch the action when they need to self-regulate -- the longer you sit there quietly, the more things you start seeing.
