just realized my nitrates are very high and my phosphates are low. Don't see any ill affect on my corals at all but I'm wondering if it affects the health of fish. Lost two wrasses and one is a vey rare one so I'm not happy. Does high nitrate like 60 affect fish health?

From observation high nitrates has little effect on fish.
I would look into other sources of fish loss.

Thank you brother, I just put in a bag of carbon just for safety. Very weird, something is going on and can't figure out. Every level seem fine for exception of nitrates.

I have become a firm believer of high levels of bacteria and parasites (And not the good kind)
Ever asked yourself.. numbers are good, water is clear and why am I seeing XXX?
Well there is more going on in our waters than we can "see"

Agreed 100 % to loose fish out of no illness, signs of anything, full color, regular breathing there is definetly more than can meet the eye or tests that we have.

I hope you can find something, I do believe as you stated above good bacteria and BAD bacteria. It definetly have something to do with. We add to many strains of bacteria for phosphates and nitrates and could be hurting other things.

Randy thx for chiming in. Lost a juvenile lennardi wrasse that I had for about a year and was out and about doing his thing before he dissapeared, and a ramboid wrasse that was about three yrs old that stopped eating and died in one week. I don't check nitrates as I check other parameters until this happened and started checking everything and found that they are very high, although it's very hard to believe they are high since everything in the tank looks good. I'm just wondering if nitrates affect more delicate fish than others. I'm bummed out, losing the lennardi is very aggravating since it's a very hard fish to come by and especially juveniles.

I'm not sure what the issue is, but I wouldn't be convinced it is nitrate. Bringing it down is a good idea, but I might look to other causes for the fish.

FWIW, we all lose fish for no apparent reason. Especially when they just disappear it is usually impossible to know why.

Could high nitrates be the reason I lost a cleaner shrimp yesterday? My nitrates are 30-40.

During my research of cyanobacteria I noticed a high population of a nematodes which is a parasite. Some of these species can affect fish some studies show.
Just another idea of unexplained fish loss

It is definetly a possibility then cause I do have little Cyanobacteria going on right now.

A small sample had, from what I could count around 20 of those guys.
Not saying they are the bad type just a heads up (there are over 2000 different species of nematodes )

This is absolutely correct.
At 2500x you can see everything and its surprising
If it's not nitrates then it's definetly something as you are saying cause my ramboid stopped eating which means it's something internal that is bothering the fish.

Very interesting because when my Nitrates went over .50 I lost a few SPS. I didn't lose any fish. So I was blaming Nitrates for SPS. All test was done only found Phosphate was starting to raise too. Happen over night the coral had no signs of fading or bleaching. Until the morning death approched rapidly.

From the reading I have done this can be first state signs of the parasite
Not saying it's the problem but does match the readings.
