My phosphates have been consistently elevated. Tanks is approaching 1 year mark of being running. I get readings between 100-200 ppb using hannah ultra low checker.

200 gallon mixed reef. ~150 lbs rock (some of which was new, some was used in a previous tank but washed and dried out). 2 inch sand bed. Trigger 44 sump with 20 gal refugium full of caulerpa, growing well (kessil h380 and tunze 8821). Running small amount (approx 1 cup) biopellets in reactor. Aquamaxx FC-280 skimmer (rated for 240-420 gal, pulling good skim).

Two radion XR 30 pro (1 G3, 1 G4). 1 Kessil 360we (angled to hit some shadowed areas). 2 mp40s and 1 maxspect gyre.

Bioload is what I'd guess moderate to high. 5 med-large tangs, 1 med-lg foxface, 1 female blue throat trigger. 5 wrasses (largest is a ruby head fairy, 3 inch). 2 small gobys. 2 medium clownfish. 1 medium filefish (in sump for eating LPS). 2 cleaner shrimp. 8 fighting conchs. Dozens-hundreds snails. Few red/blue leg hermits.

I feed approx 2 cubes frozen and 1 strip of nori daily. Target feed corals with benereef and reefroids 1-2 times per week.

440 calc, 1440 mag, nit 0-5, pH 8-8.2, temp 78-80F, sal 1.026.

When I evidence phos is high (algae or browning) I'll investigate and find it at or over 0.4-0.5 ppm. I'll run kent phosphate sponge for a day or two and that usually gets levels down to 0.2 or less. It'll stay that stable for a couples weeks but inevitably creep back up. I have used GFO and Phosphate RX off and on... doesn't seem to change this pattern much.

I do 40-50 gallon wc every 7-10 days. RO/DI water with TDS 1 or less.

Help me reefers! I want to get these phosphates under control please!

GFO can’t not work if used correctly and I personally use rhowaphos 24/7

It needs to be used in a reactor and to start it will become exhausted quickly so may need weekly changes until phosphate is under control and the ideal target is around 0.03ppm

But, start slowly as a quick reduction can affect coral health, so start of with smaller amounts, change frequently and then continue and then increase the amounts to keep it locked down.

If you don’t change it, then it won’t work, and it won’t work effectively unless it’s in a reactor.

+1 I have found rowa to be highly effective in a reactor. First time I used it I dropped po4 to low so agree with going slow. Even using the same amount but increasing flow rate through my reactor showed a greater decrease. Gotta find that sweet spot.

Thanks. When I use GFO it is always in a reactor. It's a bit messy and often I wind up getting granules loose in the sump. Any advice on how to minimize the mess? Maybe some filter floss or carbon on top of the GFO?

I have some BRS high capacity GFO. Is rowaphos better?

Does your reactor have sponges top and bottom?

With rowa I flush the reactor into a bucket and it will look like coffee. Once the water is clear I let it go. For me at a slight tumble it stays in the reactor

yes, sponges at top and bottom. Any time I start/stop the reactor it goes nuts and spews the coffee grounds again...

Maybe decrease the flow. I’ve switched from HC GFO to Rowaphos and it appears to be working better for me.
