Higher flow? 250g tank, 3x MP40's, thinking of adding a gyre. Too much flow or a good idea?

I have a 250g mixed reef tank (72x28x30H), with a decent amount of rock that interferes with flow. Rock is basically laid out as sloping upward to the rear.

I have 2x MP40QD's synced on one end in Reefcrest mode at 100% max, and a third MP40QD on the opposite end in Reefcrest mode at 100% in anti-sync with the other two. I'm thinking about adding a programmable gyre with a max of 4200 gph. Would this be a good idea, or too much flow?

It would be great! Your tank is a similar size to mine and I run 2 mp40’s and 2 ice cap 4k gyre’s it seems perfect to me. The gyre moves a ton of water but it’s a slow flow, nothing compared to the 40’s

There is no such thing as "too much flow" in the reef tank, unless you got some sensitive chalices & LPS. So really depends on the type of corals you're trying to keep. For SPS tanks, the more the merrier! On my 150g cube, I have 3 WAVs and 2 MP40s, on my nem-dominant 180g, I just have 2 MP40s...

What are "sensitive LPS"? I have some candy canes and frogspawn.

Given my configuration, am I better off mounting the gyre on my back wall or on the side of my tank?

I actually used 2 of them one on each end of the tank and then alternated the flow. I do not think you can go wrong with a Gyre.
