So I'm arguing with this guy on reddit who posted a disturbing photo and is trying to sway people into believing this is a normal sleeping behavior for his fish. I told him the mushroom was a fenestrafer mushroom and they are notorious fish eaters. He says it's a hairy mushroom and the fish is swimming around fine as we speak lol is there anyway this is possible?

It's tough to tell, but that could be a hairy mushroom wrapped up. I'd be interested to see if this is a daily thing or not! I've had clowns host weirder things...

Yeah that looks like it is getting eaten. There is no way that is a fish sleeping inside a hairy mushroom mouth lol. Maybe it somehow isn't able to take in the clownfish and the clownfish slime coat is too thick to be properly stung? Regardless, I don't think hairy mushrooms can even bring in a fish like that.

It's not a hairy mushroom though right? I seen that a fenestrafer mushroom is different and that's what It looks like to me. Also wouldn't there be enzymes and things like that in the mouth of the mushroom that breaks the fish tissue down?

That mushroom has a different mouth and no tentacles on top though. Look up fenestrafer mushroom

I'm more inclined to believe him, I saw it too, there is no reason to believe that a clownfish would not be able to handle whatever it is - fenestrafer or hairy or otherwise. That's clownfish for you. If it was other fish I'd be worried, but clownfish seems to resist stinging thanks to their slime coat, which kinda is adapted not just to specific anemone stings, but stings of whatever. Seems like the only thing they really have issues with are certain corals like torches and stuff.

It's not normal behavior for a fish to sleep in the mouth of a predator. And if so, it's probably sick and suicidal.
