How long did you wait?

So how long did you wait before you upgraded / downsized tank size?

Also why did you choose that time frame and from what size to what size?

I upgraded from 55 to 120 in 2 years. Had a great deal that was too good to pass on. I mean if you got the fund and space where you mostly permanently staying at, I would go big to begin with.

I want my builds to last 4-5 years.
Then I double the size.
3 generation below, 36 months mature.
Next will be 180, I will not go larger than this.

My first reef was a 38 gallon....I did upgrade the sump within a year. I probably wouldn't have upgraded unless I was moving. I went to a 55 gallon. That got moved to a house in 3 years, upgraded a year later to a used 65 since it was a reef ready tank and a good buy. Downgraded to a 25 gallon 4 years later, broke that and replaced with the current 29 gallon which I've had for about 10 years.

I don't really choose a time frame and haven't been without a tank running since April 2000...it may be a mess and only have softies for a time, but things have been doing much better the last few years.

Bought my 75gal tank when I moved into our current house back in 2000. Still running it today. I honestly don't get the fascination with having to keep going bigger or having to get a new tank every couple of years. Had a local guy in our reef club that I talked to at all the swaps. It seemed he was upgrading 2 to 3 times a year.

The former president of our reef club was like that. I think he started with a 90 gallon, then sold it off, moved, got a 33 gallon, upgraded again, then made a big build in a wall..200 gallon?....then dropped out of the hobby.....I think I've seen a desktop reef in some of his facebook photos. There were a lot of club members building up and then the last recession hit and many had little kids as well. I know one guy who still has his 55 gallon tank from a while ago.

Over the span of seven years:

10 gallon -> 20 -> 120 -> 200 -> 400

I know these are famous last words but my current 400 is the perfect size. It feels gigantic but the upkeep isn't that much different than my smaller earlier tanks.
