I started like alot of people with softies and LPS. After a few years I caught the SPS bug and dove in. How many of you started right in with SPS corals?

I ask this question because I think most people start with softies. However a friend of mine has the nicest 180 gallon SPS tank I have every seen and he just jumped straight in. Any others?

I think you have to have the right personality and attitude in order for that to work. I to started in softies like GSP (Green Star PLAGUE), but have since went to almost all SPS myself.

I think it can be done today, more then in the past due to forums like this one, where all the tips and tricks are readily available. :D :D

I only read about 8 books - joined a bunch of clubs, transferred 3 tanks in 6 months and had to buy a bunch of stuff 2x since I didn't pony up the first time for the right stuff or it was too small for the bigger tank. Lessons learned.
Only softy I have is a Tyree Toadstool, just not into them. I threw out a bunch that came with my 1st tank just cause they were so ugly. Didnj't realize people actually paid for that stuff! lol

I've never done well with SPS. I started with LPS/softies and always want to do SPS, but for some reason, I just can't do well with them (either slow/no growth or deaths). I seem to do well with LPS (non acans).

when I started there was no SPS it was mainly softies, mushrooms, elegance, and pulsing Xenia was the greatest thing since sliced bread!

SPS were being kept by the pioneers but the common hobbyist could only read about staghorns and such, not keep them

Way back when... and dirt was still young. It's funny to think that 10 years ago was back in the day as far as this hobby goes.

I started with SPS. My tank has been up for a year now and I have lost one frag out of about 30. I definitely agree that the Internet has really made this possible with it's wealth of information.

my first tank. i could not keep gsp alive. salinty in right levels do help. i was a softie guy. ventured into lps, the sps thing i remember no one keeping that alive ten years ago other then a small handfull. i feel into it big while housing a bunch for a freinds 180. i never realized the polyp extention on corals until then. the internet and better equipement has made things a lot eaiser in the hobbie. i would think starting off with sps as a beginer coral is only for the right person. most would be chased out of the hobbie in a failure way. it does appear we all learn the hard way though. i will also say the i never thought i would get into photography before this hobbie came along.

I never really cared much for SPS when I got into the hobby. I remember telling an employee at a LFS that I just didn't see what was so special about them. Then I saw what some real SPS looked like and I caught the bug. Now you couldn't get me to put a Zoanthid in my tank!

I started with softies, and caught the acro bug. Was surprised at how easy and successful I was at transitioning from my softy reef to a mixed reef. My new tank is looking more like an SPS tank with zoas. At least, it is in my mind, I still have to actually get the acros in there :)

I started right out with SPS and LPS in my system but I have been having a lot of problems with the SPS as of late and I am reigning things in and thinning out the SPS.

I started with softies and LPS after having fish only tanks for years. Everyone told me how difficult it was to keep corals, especially the stony corals, so I just started with the hardy stuff. Once I had some success and confidence I started upping the ante and bought my first acro...Its been all downhill since.
