How to stop getting notifications about ads?

I only want alerts/notifications about things I post or replies to me. Most of the alerts are just ads. Where can we turn that off?

Go to your Account and "Preferences". You should find Email options and other notification settings there.

Mine aren't email, they're the little bell notification. I couldn't find that in the preferences settings. They're all from reef2reef admin.

I have started going to other reef resources over the last few years, because of this.

Sorry but there are banners and small ads bliniking here and there, I have about 100k spam messages and spam notifications. I just don't log in here now, simply because it looks like yahoo circa early 2000s AD.

The badges/banners under each member name look like those NKorean generals lol.
Sad to see this place go downhill (for me).

I too find this kind of site behaviour pretty distasteful when I first joined and eventually learned how to disable it. There is absolutely no way to figure it out in your own too, so it's probably the cause of a lot of silent leavers.

I do wish more care and attention went into the badge banners too - some of them are really egregious and in your face. Honestly I wish they were more subtle, but also more of them to collect! I really enjoyed and engaged with the achievement points thing, and I wish I could earn more things to gamify engagement on the site.

We try to have a variety of badges for you guys to earn! That's also why we added a feature to turn off badges in case people don't want to look at them.

I don't think there is really anything I can possibly aim to earn within arm's reach?

It'd be nice if the badges has cohesion at all. Arguably one of the most important badges is the tank build thread but it's just text. The R2R App User badge is a bit weird and I wish I could remove it.

A simple thing would be a set of badges you get like generals stars based on your post count or like count etc.

There is so much that could be done here that would actively increase engagement.
