After a hard learned lesson I’m hoping this thread not only helps me but hopefully helps anyone else who may end up in this situation or help others avoid making the same mistakes. Never think you can be the exception and that it won’t happen to you if you skip the proper and NECESSARY steps and procedures! Because that’s the big mistake we made.
So after adding new fish to our established tank without following a proper quarantine period thinking all would be fine we have learned our lesson. Ignorance or hard headed on our part. Brought a sick fish into our system without knowing and it quickly died (after appearing to be just fine and healthy when it arrived) and passed on a disease/s and/parasites to some of our other fish. Not fully sure what all we have contaminated our tank with, but ich is definitely involved now as well.
Have been doing a lot of reading and seeing a lot of different things and opinions.
Just finished setting up several 10 gallon tanks to quarantine and treat all of our fish.
Preparing for a dreaded fallow period.
Looking for advice from others who have been through this process as to what works best and things to avoid.
-freshwater dip or no?
-if so how? Just take them in the net and drop them? For how long?
-copper dip or another dip treatment?
-if so what would be the process from the start of removing them from the display, to the dip, to the quarantine tank?
-any treatments that should or should not be added to the quarantine water?
-temp on quarantine tank? Lower/raise/remain the same throughout the entire quarantine?
-salinity? Lower it? If so how low and what rate/time span should it be lowered?
-would snails/hermits/shrimp be fine remaining in the display or would they continue to house/hold any parasites/diseases?
-should any coral be removed during this fallow period as well or be treated?
-how long to fallow or how do I know if I need to continue the fallow period longer?
-should I be concerned about the substrate or live rock?
-any questions I haven’t asked that I should have asked?
-most common sicknesses and what to look for to spot it/them?
Hoping to rid the entire tank of any diseases/parasites/hitch hikers/bad bacteria…. Pretty much starting over. (Guess that’s what we get for thinking we could skip quarantines for both fish and coral instead of getting the proper set up for that before beginning to add things to our tank )
Hope this thread helps other hard headed reefers like myself
