I bought a new Planet Aquarium 180 gallon with external overflow back in August. I didn’t really like the stands Planet offered and definitely wasn’t going to pay what they wanted for the canopy and stand. So I ordered a bunch of 1-1/2”x0.125” square and 1-1/2”x3”x0.125” rectangular A36 carbon steel and built my own metal stand.

Next I set out to case the metal stand in wood. Trying to stay on budget I used premium pine for both the canopy and stand. Each panel on the stand is attached magnetically and I have built some retainers to keep the kids from being able to pull a panel off

After much debate about stand coating I decided to go with POR-15 instead of bed liner or powder coating. The facade is adheared with magnet so I was worried about chipping powder coating and the bed liner being too thick for magnets.

For the stand and canopy I went with Varathane Carbon Gray semi-transparent stain and white flex seal for the wet side.

Late last night I filled the tank and started the leak test. I read a ton of comments on the Tideline External Overflow morning n this site and not too many were good. So I ordered an extra set of gaskets from BRS and placed them on the outside of the glass and so far no leaks.
