Hi,

Issue- Turf algae tangs won't touch.

Options

Tuxido urchin

or

remove the live rock from the tank, spray with hydrogen peroxide 3% let stand for 10 mins.
Before adding back to the tank rinse down with fresh saltwater.

Has anyone tried Option 2 and noticed any issues.

As long as you don't overdo it with the peroxide, no problem at all. I used to spot-treat algae in-situ with 12% peroxide and never saw any issues with it. Blast the algae with peroxide, give it a day or two to weaken, and then pull out the weakened algae later.

Yes. But be careful with it - 12% is potent stuff. If you have the ability to remove it from your tank that's better, then you can blast it to your heart's content, rinse it off and place it back in the tank without worrying about whether you're overdoing it with peroxide.

My rockwork is more or less cemented together, so I didn't really have the opportunity to pull out the rocks. If you can, it's better to be careful.

When I was doing that, it would be one-two 5ml syringes worth in my 350L tank. Point the syringe as close to the holdfast as you can and concentrate the peroxide there - you're trying to burn off the connection to the rock and allow for easier manual removal.

Okay ill go with my plan to remove it then. I figure I'll lose some bacteria on the surface of the rock whilst retaining the majority residing within. Ill do a fine misting over the whole structure

The only algae that ever seems to grow in my tank seem to be turf. The stuff is awful. Whole tank is full of tang that do nothing to prevent it to your point. And dosing peroxide does not rid it either for me. Unfortunately my tank too big to try and manually scrape all rocks by hand. In the few times it’s completely has gotten out of control I’ve bitten the bullet and dosed Razor. But there are a lot who are against the product. Not really a fan of either as it killed two of my fish the first time I ever used it. But I have since modified my dosing and have not had any fish die since. my tank is currently low stocked on coral so can’t really speak on the wide range that could be affected. But the handful a have all see to do fine. For dosing instead of the 6 days the product recommends I does over 12 days at 1.25 on day 1 ml per 50g and then increase and additional 1.25 per 50 a day. Once the 12 days are up I Follow the 7.5 every other day till gone and then stop all together.

Don’t rinse the rock after you spray it, just put it back in the tank. Hydrogen peroxide will break down fast in sw, but it will also continue its attack on the algae after its back in. Have done this method before, no issues.

This right here!

I just won my battle with turf algae doing this exact thing.

Just did a large water change and with the water low sprayed the exposed rocks with 3% peroxide. Let it sit for about 5mins and then filled the tank back up.

Added some Mexican turbos to help out.

Since then the algae has started and has kept receding to the point it’s almost gone.
