Hey everyone!

I’m starting hyposalinity treatment for ich tomorrow and have been gradually adding RO water to the tank over the past 24 hours. I’ll reach a salinity level of 1.009 within the next 24 hours. I’m treating my display tank because it’s a mangrove setup with no other animals aside from the clownfish I’m treating. I figured treating the entire tank at once would be the most effective approach.

To ensure accurate readings, I’m using a Hanna Checker for salinity, which I calibrated again today to be absolutely sure it provides precise results. I plan to maintain hyposalinity for at least 30 days—possibly extending it to 45 days just to be safe. My plan is to test the water as often as possible throughout the process.

For anyone experienced with hyposalinity treatment, I have a few questions:

1. What are the most common mistakes to avoid?

2. Is there anything I can do to support or improve the process?

3. Any overall tips or advice?

Monitor ammonia level with a reliable test kit
Add aeration with air stone

Your plan looks good

Here is my basic post on hyposalinity in case you haven’t seen it:

Common errors include using RODI to drop the salinity in cases of active disease. It’s generally too slow. Dechlorinated Tap water is fine, actually better, because you can match the water temperature.
Another common error is measuring errors. Finally, sometimes people bring fish out of hypo too fast - gradual rise over 4 to 5 days is best.
