I Have 75 GAL Reef Tank Running For About 9 Months Now With 2 Ai Primes About 10 Inches From Surface (Salty Pops Setting kinda of adjusted )
I Have Some Zoids Nem GSP And Some Polys

2 Wave Makers And Protein Skimmer

I Have 2 Clowns A Skopas Tang, Dimond Goby, Long Nose Hawk Fish And, Three Blue Chromis,
,And A Mondrian Goby (So Lots Of Pods) And I Spent Like $100 On A Large Sorted CUC

I Do Make My Own RODI And Mix My Own Salt (Instant Ocean) My System Is About Four Months Old So Like New Filters

Down Below Are My Most Recent Parameters (I Did Since This Use Buffers To Up PH And MAG)

Allrighttt So Also Below Are Some Things To Show What's Going On. I Keep Having This Algee Like Brown
Stuff Growing On On My Sand Bed And I Think That Is Causing My Tank To Be Foggy Sometimes
I Blow It Off It Comes Back
I Have Cleaned Sand Bed A Few Times Still Comes Back
I Have Switched Fliters Added Filters Added The Skimmer
I Did Some Close In Time Water Changes
I Did Also Try A Day Blackout
I Did Try Other Things But Nothing Has Worked

Im All For Learning And Doing My Research But The Tank Is Winning Lol

Any Advice ? Thanks In Advance

Brown stuff in the sand is likely diatoms. I'd ignore it, because in my experience diatoms always go away after matter of months and unlike cyano, dino's, gha and other microalgaes, diatoms are usually never a threat unless you have abnormally high nutrients. 17ppm nitrate could be too high but it seems you have a lot of things keeping the cycle going so you should be fine. Just keep monitoring it and take action accordingly. Manually removing diatoms can cause blooms and might possibly have to do with cloudy water, but I've never seen diatoms make water cloudy before, so that could be something else I don't know of.

Is it stringy with bubbles? If it is it could be dinos. I think your nitrates are fine. Your phosphates are high at .3. Do you run any GFO? I would try to bring your phosphates down to .1-.15.

Are you getting 0 TDS on your water post rodi?

I don’t understand the Alk number. Am I misreading 195?

Is this that API spin “something”?

Outside of Alk your parameters seem fine. If it’s a dusting of brown it’s just diatoms. Much better to have those than anything else. They outcompete dinos, and they feed copepods and other inverts. They’ll eventually subside then return then subside then burn themselves out.

Thanks, Now That You Mention It Most Of The Blooms Happen When I Mess With It.

Reporting Alk in ppm is "a thing", it's just not nearly as common as expressing Alk in dKH. By use of a calculator, 195 ppm Alk is equal to about 10.9 dKH.

I disagree that this is diatoms, diatoms usually run their course and are done in a 9 month old tank. This is either dinoflagellates or from the last pics above possibly cyano, which makes sense with your elevated nitrate and phosphate (which are both in a fine range; don't try to change them). Having zero nitrate and/or phosphate usually is said to be the culprit for inviting dinos, but you clearly have both. Is it kind of reddish-brown in color?

Looks more like dinos than anything else if you’re 9 months in. Does it only stay on the sand bed? Any bubbles in it? Does it go away at night?

Your water could be adding back in silicates. I still think it’s diatoms. But I’m not looking at it through a microscope.

The stuff on the sand bed looks like diatoms although it's a bit unusual in a 9 month old tank unless something is adding silica back into the water.

What type of sand did you use and where did you get it?
Does the brown stuff come back after you stir up the sand?

I honestly don't know what to think here, it does look like diatoms, but those are usually gone by 9 months.

The OP says they are getting 0 ppt TDS out of their DI.

The OP's nitrate and phosphate are not zero, which is often said to bring on dinos...

@tbrown what do you think?

Ok, so it's not likely to be the sand.

I'm starting to swing towards Dinos - Do you know if your LFS has a microscope?
Some shops can ID dinos from a sample of the sand bed for you - which would stop a lot of guessing.

I mean...Some old tanks can have diatoms I'm sure of it. I have a tank that is almost 2 years old and it still gets diatoms that come and go from time to time.

That's not untrue 🙂
