I Need Help With Equipment For A 40 Breeder.

I need help picking out the equipment I will be using for my 40 gallon breeder I plan to setup.On this tank I wish not to have a sump but I do wish to have a skimmer.I would like the total build cost to be under $400.Please tell me what equipment I should buy.I plan to keep all types of corals and clams.

$400 probably won't be enough. Your looking at $150++ for a nice skimmer, $200+ for lighting if you wan't to keep all corals, $100ish for base rock, or $150+ for live rock, $40-50ish for sand, $60ish for powerheads, $30 for a heater, and $100++ for a stand. And if you don't already have the tank, that will be another $120 unless you hit up the $1/g sale.

If you plan to have a 40 breeder with all kinds of corals... you'lll probably need to spend more than that! I'd say if you want to keep clams and sps your lighting might just cost you more than half of your budget if not all!! I'm currently building a 40 breeder and I'm in way more.

It's not that it can't be done for that budget but, for the more difficult corals like sps... you'll spend your budget in accquiring the adequate water circulation and filtration equipment. That being said I succesfully kept all types of softies and hardier LPS for several years in a low budget tank with no probs... it's the sticks that started giving problems ... :)

IMO if you really plan on keeping ALL types of corals especially sps... I would buy the adequate equipment the first time around... in my personal experience i''ve ended up spending double when you decide to upgrade the equipment!... just my .02 cent though... anyways you can always improvise and wait for awesome deals to show up to save some $:smile:

sure I'll chime in :) $400 will last you just long enough to buy second hand lights and a second hand skimmer. not counting the tank, stand, sump, ATO, RO/DI, sump/fuge, return pump, powerheads, heater, chiller, control unit, probes, possible calcium reactor, plumbing supplies.

I really REALLY wish that didn't sound so a$$inine but at this moment I am doing a 40b build and the ONLY reason I am under $400 is that I have been scrounging the last 2 years finding awesome deals and trading/selling those pieces and working up the parts I need, and even then I had 1/2 the stuff laying around or I wouldn't even be close yet. If you had a budget of $750, yeah you could do it but it will still be mostly second hand stuff and your rock/sand will need to be found someplace like craigslist where you will inherit all the problems the last guy had.

Is this your first tank? What do you already have heaters, stand, tank, salt, test kits ect?

what kind of corals are you wanting to keep you could watch for a used aquac remora skimmer the pro would be ideal as the non pro would be a little under rated in my opinion but for lps and softies you should be fine with the pro I think they make a good skimmer for the price not the best out there you will need to look for some used lighting to stay under budget 400 is going to be hard to stay under but the 40b is an awsome size tank

with that said I suggest only buying stuff that will work long term it will be far cheaper to do it right the first time just post what you are thinking of doing and you will get alot of opinions about it that will help you decide
