I had a much smaller skimmer of a lesser brand and it was using a sub sump that was a cheap plastic storage bin. It was semi boyant and trying to change the filter sock almost always knocked over the unstable skimmer. It took forever to get it standing up straight and level because it was sitting on a narrow floating unstable upside down plastic bowl.

Now I have a union for the filter sock pipe to make swapping easy. Also the sub sump used to keep stable water level for the skimmer is a 20 gallon long aquarium that is very stable and does not float. I think the skimmer is a vertex brand and it has a very powerful after market needle wheel pump. I think this setup will allow for easier maintenance and a higher bioload.

I just finished setting it up so not shown is my chemical reactor.

Upgraded skimmers are always a bonus and the hand me down price is always right!
