So I was looking for my purple firefish earlier tonight who has vanished and saw something I've never seen before in my tank showing its self from under one of the rocks. At first I thought it might have been the skeletal remains of my firefish because it was long and spiny looking but then I noticed it was moving and retracted back under the rock. shortly after I saw another one of these long spiny things slide out from under the rock. I have no idea what these could be. They appear to be quite long and I've never added anything to this tank that remotely could be this big and/or have long arms. My first thought was bristle worm? maybe a hitchiker on a troch snail I added. The only coral I have was dipped and that was added a couple months ago. When I saw the second similar one come out from under the rock I thought maybe brittle star. Not sure how that could have gotten in their and be that big. I do have a YWG and Tiger Pistol Shrimp that moved to the other side of the aquarium under a different rock tower. Up till about a week ago they had been burrowing and living under the rock that this strange creature came out of. Maybe that's why they moved. Anyway here are a couple pics and short vids. Can anyone guess what this could be? Should I try and yank it out or leave it? 20251107_212329.jpg

dang. so much for a pest free tank. i was going to get a trap to catch/control them. this one just seemed very long.
Bristleworms are beneficial detrivores. You will not be able to eradicate them without nuking the tank.

I bought some, along with spaghetti worms, for my tank, if they creep you out you can get a arrow crab that will gladly eat them for you.

Don’t touch them but bristle worms are pretty cool to have in a tank

Well it really seems opinions are mixed but at this point I haven't seen any show up during any of my weekly tank maintenance so perhaps not infestation level just yet. It really was creepy to see these two tentacle looking things emerge from under the rockwork. I did order a trap from Etsy but I guess I'll just sit on it until they became a real problem, hopefully that won't happen. They remind of brittle star arms.

Their populations will adjust based on available food, if you want to have less of them makes sure you have proper flow in your tank to reduce detritus buildup. I used to have a ton until I upgraded my pumps.

These are some of the best cuc. Ugly, yes; but hard workers and ultimately inevitable, imo

inevitable ? LOL I have yet to get them. 40+ lbs TBS live rock just yeeted into the tank without a care about checking any hitchhikers (sadly not many...you guys way over play that) . Any corals i have just yeet them into the tank as well. I dont have time for dips, or anything. I have yet to see any bristle worms etc.

Try baiting them, at night, by placing frozen food in mesh bag. I would be very surprised if your rock didn't come with them.

How long has the tank been running? By "inevitable", i mean "sooner or later".
Often they are quiet small. I feel the same way about pods. Especially with liverock from the ocean.
I have 3 predator wrasses if there was a worm or worms I'd think they would be attacking the rocks. All they do is patrol the tank /rockwork . I almost pity most pests in my tank. I call those wrasses my tank security team, The live rock did have a feather duster i saw moving only once and a bunch of barnacles that were alive at one point and 3 guesses on who took care of the barnacles. Those guys are why i wont buy feather dusters or other types as its just a meal for them. The trade off is I just toss things in the tank and not worry about it. I'd say its a pretty fair trade, lol.
