What is it's nick name ?
Pocillipora does not really have a nick name. It's one of the few invasive sps. This coral can reproduce via polyp bail out, basically polyps leave the skeleton/coraillite structures and settle into the substrate and rock and start new colonies, it's not an sps I would introduce to my system. A hardy coral and some are very attractive, but once they start to sprout everywhere hobbyist often regret introducing the coral.

Well that's not good news. I don't think I want it taking over the tank seeing how my thank is only 28 gallons. Maybe I'll return it for an exchange.

They're pretty though. I have had one in my 180 for 2.5 years and before that it was in my 125 about as long. I haven't had a problem with mine so far.

I returned it to the individual who sold it to me. I stated that I had learned that it can reproduce by polyp bailout. He asked where I heard that and said it was not true. Not with the coral I was returning anyway. This individual has at least 1000 gallons of frag tanks running. I ask this....who is correct ? I think I believe him over the advice I got from this post. I will buy another frag and take him at his word.

Its a fast growing beginner Sps. I have it in my bc29, and I love it. Its a beginner SPs, and one of the first sps in my tank. I had no issue with it. I won't expect it to bail out unless the tank is in terrible state.

Tahoe has nothing to gain from the advice he gave you, and coral seller does have something to gain. Now think about that ;)

Yes they do reproduce elsewhere in the tank. It isn't a problem for me as I have a 180 gallon tank. So I personally really don't mind. Since you have a smaller tank you might in fact mind it. Although it does take quite a while before it'll do that. Here is a picture of my main colony and I'll show you where the others are beginning.

Understood. But think about this....the seller is a hobbiest, not a retail store. He has nothing to gain or lose. He could cear less if I am a repeat customer or not.
Also....he's a PhD. I think he knows what he's talking about.

You might want to show him the pics I just posted ;) That main colony is 5' away from the furthest one that's growing. The colony has always been where it's located in the picture. Just because he has a PhD it doesn't mean he knows 'everything' there is to know about coral. And there are countless people on this forum with phd's...

Are we talking about the same kind of coral ? Sometimes the same names are used for corals that look similar but are actually different.

The polyps on your example look bigger than the coral in my photo.

It is the very same.... My tank is very well fed. The polyps will become larger or smaller depending on water quality, feeding and light. I feed my tank live foods and reefbugs complete. Until I have done that they were smaller like yours.
