If your tank crashed right now, would you start over?

Imagine you get home, and your tank has crashed. (Insert whatever thing crashed your tank) Would you start over, or would you take a step back from the hobby?

I would continue FOWLR 😬
This.

I had a nicely growing reef tank with sps and lots of other corals. I let the nutrients bottom out while sick and lost 80% of it. Now i run a big FOWLR and have the corals that are left still. I am enjoying less testing and stress, if they survive, yay. If they dont, they dont.

I also have non-reef safe fish now, thats kinda cool to have and im testing which corals it will pick at.

I would start over. Learning in this hobby is the only way to get better and sometimes its simple, sometimes its catastrophic. I have the equipment, so why not.

I have had a couple of crashes in my 3 tanks but still going strong and didn’t restart anything

I would definitely step back! But my reason for that answer is that we are a couple years from retiring, and want to travel, so my tank will most likely be coming down soon anyway. Soon, being a relative term here 😏

My IM15 crashed. The protein skimmer overflowed. Killed nearly all of my corals except for the GSP, zoas, and palys.

I'm working on getting it back together, but it's frustrating. I lost all of snails, my wrasse which I loved. I wish I had just removed the skimmer once it started acting funny, but I kept trying to fix it.

I'm going to keep going, because I'm stubborn like that.

There are no LFS's around, so it would be easiest to step back.

I would have to start over. I got no way to move this 240 gallon tank outside right now.

I dunno.

My tank just crashed less than a year ago. If it did it again... I've bounced back from a few major crashes, but I don't know what I'd do if I had to put up with such major crashes in quick succession.

I keep a few tanks, fresh and salt. If my 90 gallon reef tank were to crash I might repurpose that tank for trying to spawn altum angelfish, but I would still need to keep a reef tank of some kind!

Start over. Already did once when we lost power for several days back in January 🤣.

I literally bought a whole home generator to deal with the worst of weather on the Outer Banks/potential crash. The last thing on my mind was saving food, running the AC satellite, etc. I also have to get a house sitter whenever I go away to feed my fish clean the skimmer and since I am the automatic top off, have someone else add RODI water to my tank daily.

in the meantime, I did have an undetected crash when I was away as my return pump failed plus thermostats were in the sump while the heaters were in the display tank. Temperature 90° so I did lose 20% of my fish and all my coral. At the same time I was treating cyano bacteria with chemi clean. I managed to wipe out all my good bacteria, all my nuisance Algae with exception of Dino’s, which taught me how frustrating this hobby can be. With everything that I’ve invested into it I would say I would have to continue if I had another crash.

I actually do need to get a life outside of my tanks but for the time being it is very rewarding when coral’s and fish prosper because of stuff that I’ve learned from listening to all of you guys and gals on R2R

And the look on people‘s faces when they see a healthy tank is priceless
