I'm just lucky I guess

About 2 months ago I had my min pin puppy break his leg in his crate and snap his tibia in half. It had to be pinned, which required major surgery ($$$).

Well, last night my doberman (2 yrs old) who is usually very passive, and my roommate's 15 year old chow mix got into a fight. The chow grabbed ahold of Gretchen's leg and bit several times. Gretch had several puncture wounds and a cut, which I tended to. She was whining some before I went to bed but woke me up a little bit ago. I looked at her foot and it's roughly 3x the size it should be. I'm betting this is going to be a carpal fracture of some sort, just don't know how bad :( If it's bad she's going to need surgery, but at the very least she'll need xrays and a bandage. I don't know what we're going to do about the chow...Gretchen has never showed any signs of aggression toward any dog, but then again neither has my roommate's dog.

I'm worried about the $$$ aspect of things...my min pin's vet bill was very high, and if Gretchen has to have surgery hers will be high too. I'm out of things to sell, other than my picasso clowns, and I REALLY don't want to sell them. I guess I should calm down and see how bad things are. I just really feel bad for Gretch...she looks like she's in so much pain despite the pain meds I gave her. The clinic that I work at opens in 2 hours, so I'll be headed there ASAP.

Gretchen broke her 4th metacarpal. Her leg is bandaged up and she'll be on cage rest for 4 weeks but other than that she'll be fine :) I'm just glad she doesn't have to have surgery!!!

Sorry to hear about your dog C, glad it turned out for some what better news....Next to pit bulls Chows are my lest favorite dog. To many horror stories about them, a friend of my parents had one that was absolutely mean to anybody but the specific owners and even bit one of them a few times....

Thank goodness she doesn't need surgery! Sounds like your dogs have had it rough!! I would say that the chow is lucky your dobie didn't tear her up!! :D I have three large dogs and when one gets hurts it make me very sad. You just can't seem to make them feel better and I worry they don't understand.
How is your little one doing??

I was just rereading your originally post and realized you said your roomates dog is 15. I have heard of a lot of chows getting "angry" and doing uncharacteristic things as they age. My brother had a chow mix from 8 weeks until 16 and he was always sweet until about 14 when he got very agressive - he stopped growling and started biting!! He bit my mom in the hand pretty bad. He developed cancel in his throat and my brother wound up having him put down. But be carefull around the aging chow - they turn into GRUMPY old men/women!!

Gretchen is doing well...she has commandeered my other pillow on my bed and sleeps next to me, sometimes threatening to push me off the bed. She usually sleeps at my feet under the covers but seems to think that she deserves special treatment now (which she does :) ). She's got to be on cage rest for 4 weeks with weekly bandage changes but since she's got a splint and a major bandage she's using that leg, though not bearing much weight on it. Gunner (min pin) gets his staples out from the pin removal on Wednesday and Gretchen has a bandage change on Monday. Luckily I work for the vet clinic that is doing all of this, so they're pretty flexible with scheduling ;) :)
