Drilled holes in the bottom of display tank. will be adding two at the top back panel for over flow. using magnetic check valves to prevent back flow just incase return pump ever fail. still working out the sump area as it maybe larger than 40 gal. refugium it self will be 10/20 gallon,: bio media will be 10 gallon and skimmer area.ill be starting with dry rock in the main display with caribsea arag-alive Bahamas oolite sand. in the refugium will have 1 large live rock with algae growth.

started out with a basic tank and added the features I like from the more expensive tanks. picture framed glass is top fav. DIY has kept my interest in the hobby long term. working on the sump and attaching all of the tech to the walls before building the outer wall next

ran into a little issue with the UV plumbing size. still working on the tech. tomorrow will be filling the tank completely, today was a mini test run making sure no leaks. then designing wall panels.

finally got to the water test. have to drain it again and level the front of the support out as the water is putting more pressure on the front glass

bad start on this build. the tank cracked after I tried to lift it to be leveled better. straight through the bottom panel. sucks. going to get another tank tomorrow. ill try and save some plumbing. alot can happen in one day. 😩

new tank is up, waiting for silicone to dry full before plugging the sump back in. I can make tanks all day. NOOO NOT REALLY!!!😆

a couple 6-7 heads sun xod torches (deeper gold when seen in person) ending with some torch green tips. making a list of corals and fish to throw in this baby tomorrow

tempImageEZVXxO.png

powder blue tang
female anthias
purple tang with white tail

coral/testers :

rose tip anemone
venom favia.

plan on adding a true yellow tang as my last fish to this system, maybe a achilles tang as well if I come across one

rose tip lasted a day in the tank, it moved over night and got chopped up by wave maker, the foot was the only thing left. messed up the water in the tank filtering it all out. order blue tang didnt like the water yucked up

have to figure out the skimmer as its making micro bubbles in the main display. figure I add a large filter floss between the skimmer and return pump

Not familiar with what a magnetic check valve is. However, help me understand a need for a check valve on overflow ports.

After 55years in an industry dealing with marine biofowling, I see check valves as a point of failure.

if I ever need to move the water from the sump I can fill the display tank completely then shut the over flow off. its a way to access the sump to clean or fix clogs, breakage without having to drain into buckets. also I refill/water changes using the emergency drain valves so im also able to shut off the back flow so the sump wont over fill. no water on floors dealing with the tank.

I gotta say, i like that idea. Makes me want to someday plumb in a 3rd tank behind the wall for somethin like that. Anyway, sorry to hear about the crack..sucks. makes me want to think of best way to do build so the tank never gets lifted to level.. but have adjustments for stand feet or somewhere under support board. Love seeing new and different ways of doing things being done, esp to solve common issues or pain points with husbandry. My gravity fed ato's have kept mine stable on autopilot for so long now. I Look forward to see your progress.

I always build a home for anemone first out of rubble rock, a stable base and a hole that is on an angle face so they can hide whole way in and really establish a foothold and then peak out to as much light of their choosing.. in a spot with mild flow. Have never had on leave unless they split , which they did over 90 times now.. and i just got some of THOSE off powerheads other day.. but have avoided the chop-UP so far. Nothing died? Any odor that made u nauseous?

no odors when doing the water change not ive noticed. the anthias died same day of incident. I have rocks with small and large holes but it seem to not wanted to stay in one place. not sure if it was the flow in the tank a I have it set on tide

I really have to start updating this thread. "the burn tank and sump"

new corals are coming. I rearranged some things in and out of the tank. making ways for new entries and a full room of aquariums up to 1000 gallons in the back office.

ive adjusted a few things with my set up. starting with the dosing of magnesium, im now dosing 15ml/60 gallons.

im still not dosing calcium as using cal hypo adds sufficient calcium to the water. im very happy with this as now I can use that money towards other dosing products that gets used alot more.

sodium hydroxide been adjusted to 1.5ml/ 60 gallons- 30x/day. sodium hydroxide is being dosed for PH stability

now for the coral food. redsea amino acids, vitachem, zooplankton, reefroids, omega one fish food pellets, seaweed gets blended up and stored in liquid form.

I feed this 3x per day. I dont target feed just poor it in by power head.

during lights out I add 15ml of bacteria every night.

the fav part about my system is the burn tank which to me is the power horse behind this system. ive adjusted a few things when it comes to water recycling/water burning.(my name for it).....

instead of having it active multiple times per day im now adjusting to twice per month. the burn tank cleans the water, removes organics, removes unwanted bacteria and pest, parasite /fungus prevention, slightly lowers nutrients, fix Alkalinity, Ph and ammonia if any is present.

instead of dipping new coral I run the burn tank, more so the use of cal hypo which adds chlorine to the water in small amounts when used properly which rids unwanted hitch hikers that are not seen. reason I say this. I put a receding torch coral in my tank from someone else's stank and the tissue has become better looking and more fuller.

I had a chance to snatch up a Walt Disney across small colony that also had tissue recession but decided against it as moving it from the current system so soon to me would've been a no no. I know the opportunity is still there for me to get it and try it out so once I feel good about it then I'll take it off the current owners hands. as we all know acro's are super sensitive. Acro's will be the tell of all tells when it comes to my fix all system

the refugium is teaming with life. im pretty sure im in love with more of the mechanics and chemistry vs the display 😌

so many life forms, the tiger pods copepods eat all algae that grows on the display glass pretty quickly. it looks like termites degrading wood lol.

Tank perimeters;
PH 8.1-8.2
ALK 12-14
CAL. 540
MAG 1500+

I run my numbers on the higher end due to calcium being added by cal hypo. once I add acro's im sure all the corals will be consuming alot more alkalinity by then
