I haven't been to a LFS for a very long time as my tank is stable and coral wise pretty much full....but today I went to an LFS that is about 5 miles from me..just to have a look and see if there were any corals to buy.
I was looking at some yellow/orange mushrooms but at £25 per head it was a bit much for me..so I bought a few pieces of red montipora.
While we were chatting the guy asked about my lighting..( I have an iT580..blues start at 6am and go off at 11pm and the whites start at 8am and peak at 12 - 2 at 40% and then back to zero by 6pm ) and he wasn't that impressed with how long the blues were on for and how low the white percentage was. He said his lights were on for 10hr max each day and his whites hit 50% for 3 hours middle of the day.
My tank is 240lt, 4' long and 20" high. External filter with a small hang on skimmer. MY cal is 420 and mag is 1400. Kh/Alk is always around 8.3. Softies mainly. The montipora was bought very cheaply and I want to see if it will survive in my tank.

So..I have two questions for you all....with the information above
1. Are my blues/whites on for too long...how long are your lights on for
2. is 50% for whites too much/not enough for a tank like mine

Thanks guys.

I have 4 tanks and I run my lights 10-12 hours peak intensity.

I run my whites at about 30%, nothing wrong with white lights. One of my tanks has hallides so the light is very white compared to leds.

I run 13 hours a day and 10 hours with 200 watts of full white light at 5000k on about 40 gallons of water. Light is very personal with virtually no right or wrong. Small changes over months is the best way to get what you like, inhabitants will adjust and you can make changes from there. I never listen to someone telling me I’m doing something wrong in this hobby. This is just part of my light

Do you have a link to the iT580? Just curious about the specs. Also, 17 hours is a bit long. I run mine for 13 with an hour ramp up and down, but even this is longer than what I see others doing.
