I got some of the Instant Ocean krill and Cyclop-Eeze "gel" foods awhile ago. I've been feeding the krill to my Dendrophyllia, Tubastrea, and Balanophyllia corals with some regularity and they've responded very well. A couple of times I've had excess of the krill and have dumped it in my LPS tank. I'd like to say that the corals got some of it, but the fish and shrimp sucked it all up before the corals could get a sniff. I've been mixing the Cyclop-Eeze in my "cocktail" that I feed to my Scleronephthya and Nephthyigorgia azooxanthellate corals.
I put the word "gel" in quotes because the food isn't in a gel form like you'd expect. It comes in packets filled with a kind of runny goo that contains the krill or Cyclop-Eeze. (Instant Ocean also offers a couple of blends and a brine shrimp product. I've not tried those.) The goo is supposed to be enriched with vitamins and other good stuff.
The products allow you to feed what normally would be frozen foods without having to go through the thawing process. It also is a solution if storing frozen reef foods in the refrigerator is not allowed. It is at my house, but I know some are not permitted to put "that stuff" in the refrigerator. For normal feeding, you simply tear the corner off of one of the packets and squeeze the goo into the water. Very easy and not very messy. I've been cutting open the packet with scissors and putting the food in a small cup so I can target feed.
I mention all of this because I'm a big believer in feeding a variety of foods from several sources to assure that the corals and fish get a balanced diet. This is another source, but it's a different type of food for me. I've always fed either frozen or dry foods. I've been pleased with both of the foods I've tried and will be making them a regular component of my reef's diet. Has anyone else used these foods? How are you feeding your tanks with the food?
