Every time I frag and use BRS insta-set, I wonder what kind of nasty I'm putting in my water. I always give the coral/plug a rinse in salt water before putting it back in the tank, but it just smells sooo wrong.

Is it really safe?

I would continue to rinse just to be safe. The only caution i would give with the insta set is that it makes the glue get hot really fast so make sure not to get glue and insta set on you or the coral.

If insta set does get, i believe it floats to the surface and will be quickly removed by filtration. I think it is acetone based.

It does smell nasty but I've never heard of anyone mentioning it causing issues. I use it and like you I rinse the frag before placing in the tank.

EDIT: after reading a tip from someone I no longer spray it on but instead use a pipette so i can direct it to just the glue instead of spraying it all over

That's a pretty good tip. I was just thinking earlier that I wish it had a plastic tube like a can of WD40 to narrow and direct the spray.

It smells like what the devil puts in his gas tank. Like a mix of kerosene, brimstone and pure evil. It works real good though :)
