Here are some pics of two types of scolymias I just ran across.

This one is from Tonga.

Does anyone have any info on this type of scolymia? This is my first experience with the Tonga variety. (if that is truly what it is)

Here is a really nice, large red one.

Think the second one is a cynaria.

After doing some looking around, it looks like you are right. What attributes do you see that helps you determine the difference between the two?

I believe this is also a cynaria (?)

Its hard to tell apart the first two from scoly's but the last is easy I dont know what merits one to be another but the last two are indeed cynarinas, is any one a coral skeletelologist lol I bet if you ask Bob Fenner @ wetwebmedia.com he would know. He knows everything.

Also CITES (I didnt look it up so it may be off) is who/what dictates a corals "season" They regulate how much of each species can be pulled from each reef.

I've done some research (net reading) and talked to the manager of my wholesaler and It sounds like the two are often sold with the names mixed up. It sounds like sometimes it's purely mistakes and other times it may be due to the amount of CITES for that particular type of coral. I guess misnaming them can help slide them through customs... (?)

I can't believe that one just sold on ebay for over $900.

I might put mine up on there. It should fetch between $1200-$1500 with the current $ being spent.

Seems to be the new flavor of the month.

They're nice corals though and the one on ebay was pretty sick but IMO the oceans whatever was nicer.

Props though to BTR for busting out with some nice scolies...

Paid something like $300 shipped for mine.

If someone offered me $1200 it would be in a nice new home :) lol
