So what species is more likely to spawn babies, I'm generally curious. Digging deep in threads on R2R you'll find my my plate that spawned babies and also a chalice (pink *******) that came back after being dead for months. Absolutely couldn't believe it. Lost the chalice to an alkalinity swing and was really bummed out. Since the chalice was on live rock I left it in the tank. I was in disbelief to see a piece of glowing pink spot months later. I wish all coral would do that, lol.Looks like it's on its way out but if the mouth is intact it can recovery.
When the mouth gapes and deteriorates it's done - although the flesh can linger for quite sometime.
Whether or not it will spawn babies on the skeleton seems to be species dependent - I've never had any of mine do it no matter how long I kept the skeleton
What are your parameters? When you placed it in the tank, did you turn it upside down once to make sure there wasn’t an air bubble trapped underneath? These air bubbles can create a dead spot that infect the other coral. If it’s neither of these, I would guess too much flow and/or light. Plates can be tricky, but I would leave the skeleton in there if it does pass. It can take months for new plates to sprout off the skeleton, but it does happen.
