Is my red planet dead?

I finally found a sweet deal on a nice looking ORA Red Planet frag deal from one of the sponsors on here. It showed up today and after I floated it for an hour in my frag tank, I took all of the frags out of their bags to drip accumate them. Everything looked good except for my Red Planet. Its colors looked blotchy and it kinda stunk. I drip accumated it anyways for about 3 hours. Why so long? Cuase I put everything in a 5 gallon bucket with real slow drip cuase I knew I was gonna be working late. Anyways.. the Red Planet is in my frag tank right now but when I take it out of the water it still stinks.

Is it dead? I'll have to find a camera to take pictures. I've never had this happen before so I dunno if its dead or not.

What color is it? Excreting any tissue? What was the temp when you took it out of the bucket?

Three hours in a bucket would make the water room temp, i would think.. Is the red planet white??

If the flesh is falling off at all and you can see the white skeleton then it'll prob be gone by morning. The smell isn't a good sign either. That being said I have brought back a couple frags from the dead because they had some color on them. They looked miserable for a while but I still have them now, however this is not the norm.

I never drip acclimate my corals, snails or hermit crabs. Only fish, shrimp and starfish, but that's just me. Temp acclimate for 20 minutes and put in the shade. Haven't lost anything that way yet. Fish and inverts I acclimate for about 2 hours, the more sensitive ones I do for 3.

Not good if it's white either. Is there any color showing? MIne came in half white and a little red but is now thriving. I'll attach a pic for you.

Nope nothing but temp aclimation myself here.... Sounds like it's a goner if it stinks bad..:(

Same here-and a lot of times not even a temp acclimate. Only acclimate things I'm real scared to lose like expensive chalices.

Don't acclimate fish any which way, just get dropped in-mobile inverts of any and all sort get dripped though.


As far as the RP- that long of an acclimation could be a temp issue, but for now, if it has flesh on it, give it a shot. If it bleaches out, then you'll have your answer, and the minimal amount of dead tissue shouldn't be an issue in your tank, so no reason to yank it before it's had as much of a chance as possible.

You should definitely try and get a pic up if you can so we can see it. Other than that, as everyone else is saying... If there is still flesh left there is still a chance.

a acropora has a distinct smell when it is thriving. there may have been some sponge or something that died could be the cause. did you dip the coral for pests? that coulda sent it over the top

Wow, I'm surprised that not many people acclimate there corals. I don't drip but I slowly add tank water to the bag or container as it floats.

i add maybe three cups of water to the bag then in they go to a container with my dips and interceptor. then into the tank 15 minutes later

+1, this is similar to my acclimation process as well. Best of both worlds I think (temp and a very quick pH, etc acclimation).

The temp in the bucket was at 80. The temp in my fishroom stays at 80. I'll have to get a picture of it.

NOw that I looked closer... it does look like the flesh is coming off of the skeleton.

Might have a chance. I wouldn't do anything with it now but keep it out of flow. It is possible the flesh might grow back over the dead skeleton, its a slim chance, but still is a chance IMO. I am pretty sure you will know in the next day or so if it turns all white.

leave it in but that is a severe case of RTN. i've had corals come back from that state but most of the time you end up saving a polyp or two and the grow out from there takes forever!!! good luck with the piece.

hhm yeah I also use a cup and acclimate that way in a bucket over a three cup period of 10-15 min depends how much water came in the bag ..wow doesn't look good the base still encrusted somewhat?
