You'd be surprised what a coral can come back from. If recession continues you can try an iodine dip but that coral can definitely recover. I had a chalice colony come back from a complete skeleton, I took pictures because I literally could not believe it.

I have an iodine dip right here, the seachem one. Is there any harm in doing so?

It also seems like the sand, after waving/shaking it a bit, won’t come off

It probably won't hurt but might not be necessary at the moment. The sand is sticking to the mucus the coral is most likely producing.

the sand-covered part might not come back if it is dead, but recovery for the rest of the colony is extremely likely

No need to worry if your water is good. Favia is super hardy corals and will come back. The sands will be repelled by the corals with time. Keep it clean, safe, at low flow

It'll come back, dip and leave in a safe place down low.

Had one almost completely melt, and i placed it in a back corner of my tank that I can barely see, year and a half later i only noticed the other week that its completely come back!
