Is this rust on my mp10 impeller?

I wouldn't, but I'm sure plenty of people would just ignore it. If there is rust, who knows what metals and contaminants are being introduced to the water.

I don't know. I'm a noob. I figured there's some way to fix it, coat it, or something but I don't really know much lol.

There are plenty of Vortech users with the same issues who continue to use their pumps with no ill effects... myself included.

As someone mentioned earlier, start to worry if the magnet rusts and swells up.

You can use vinegar to remove the rust on any of your aquarium equipment.

If you're worried about it, just change out the wet side. But you shouldn't have a problem with it.

Rust = ferric oxide.
GFO = (granular) ferric oxide.

Not really the whole story. If there is rust the metal is corroding and whatever mix of metals and other contaminants that make up the metal are being released. Not just ferric oxide.

I've been using Vortechs for years, and have the exact same thing on my wet sides, its harmless.

Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it's a small enough amount of whatever that between water changes and carbon you never see any negative effects. Or maybe your tank would be even better if there was no rust. Doesn't change the fact that it's not just ferric oxide being added to you water. I may be over precautious but I would rather be safe than sorry.

As far as I remember, the shaft is pure iron metal, and the little rust wont pose any problems. If it was pure alloy, which contains other metals, then you'll have a problem with the rust. If your concerned, about the little rust, you might as well stop reefing all together. Because its inevitable, you'll get build up on all the equipment which houses magnets, that's gauranteed, especially if you use GFO.

It is such a small amount for the stainless that it should not hurt the system.

@robert s b. I disagree with you telling a member to stop reefing due to being concerned about rust. Everyone can have their opinion and I also don't want rust in a tank no matter who says it's safe. The fact is unless you know exactly what's rusting then how can you tell me it's safe? I'm sorry but you can not compare GFO to a rusting alloy. Also your right, you will get build up on other components so are you just going to let them rust out or change the rusting items?

The shaft would be made of stainless, an alloy. But even if it was "pure iron" it's my understanding that even in something that is suppose to be just iron will also have other contaminants. I'll remind you, I never said it was causing a problem. I'm just saying it's a fact it's not just ferric oxide and I would rather reduce any unknowns entering my system. If something is rusting in my system it gets removed, no matter how little.

I'm sorry if I offended you. But the little rust will not pose any problems what's so ever, I can guarantee that, but if your concerned like I stated earlier, change it out. I have the original westside's from all my MP60, except for one when the magnet swelled up and I replaced it, but once again after a few months the shaft has the same rust on it at the tips, but MY experience it didnt pose any problems. I'm an old school reefer, been reefing 23 yrs. I've seen many of my equipment have minor rusting and never posed any problems what's so ever. But like I said, if your concerned, change it out.
