Is this rust on my mp10 impeller?

I don't think anyone is saying that a small amount of rust is for sure causing problems. I'm just pointing out that it's not just ferric oxide. I'm glad you haven't had any issues with it and hope you never do. But this doesn't mean that it's harmless.

I can't help but mention, you said if it was an alloy it would be a problem, and it is. So you're replacing all your wet sides as we speak right? lol..

Well, for some context, I'm not currently using the powerhead. I am setting up a second tank this xmas break because I'm bored and wanted to only use equipment that I have in storage. I figured I would do something completely different than my main display tank just for fun.

I was just inspecting all equipment before using it and I noticed that rust. Upon searching, it seemed that the general consensus was to not use an item that had rust on it. However, there were many people that also said that it's not enough to matter and should not be an issue.

So with that being said, thanks everyone for your information and input. I'm not going to use the powerhead as I have an extra XF250 that I installed instead. However, I am going to contact ecotech about getting the wetside replaced. Regardless of how I feel about the rust, if I decide to sell it, I want to make sure I don't sell someone a part that has rust on it.

Do the maxspect gyres rust like this as well? Was planning on getting some mp10's for my next build but now knowing they rust and that it's common I would like to dodge that even if it doesn't have negative impact. Once something starts rusting I replace it and those are too expensive for me to go doing that on.

Edit: wait thats just the wet side so 70$ or so is all it would cost. Actually that's pretty cool.

I just cleaned mine on the nano on Saturday and noticed the same thing. After taking it apart , I noticed the inner shaft was ground up and unfortunately the ceramic bearing fell apart. I had to order a new wet side.

It shouldn’t rust, and if it does, failure is in the future. I wouldn’t really debate whether rust is harmful, but a rusting part is a failing part and should be replaced.

Yes it is not enough to mess with your system but watch for this. I had the magnet swell on mine and it almost destroyed my tank thank god I noticed it in time that it wasn’t a total system killer. I lost a lot of coral because of where I had it it was hard to see

I took my xf250 apart yesterday and I didn't notice any parts that could rust.

If you're worried about it, just change out the wet side. But you shouldn't have a problem with it.

agreed, you could buy an iron test kit if you want though to confirm

Thank you for checking that for me! :D Very good to know. Man, I dunno.. changing the wetsides is cheap enough but that pic Gonebad395 just posted is a little too scary for me to go investing in the MP's, lol... That's a little beyond the acceptable downside range especially when priced as high as they are. No cords in the tank and a battery backup is hard to beat, but that pic is a tank killer if you don't catch it in time :/

I agree you don't want something in your tank if you can help it. But I have black sand and as most people know it is magnetic. So wouldn't that mean it has some time of ferrous something in it? So I would think I have rust somewhere somehow. I have never had any ill effects from my sand. Unless I am completely off base about this...

Yes- clean it as best as you can with a toothbrush and baking soda and then apply a baby dab of silicone over the hub to protect the pin from rust

I have that same discoloration on a most of the vortech prop shafts in my system and I choose to not fuss over it and there has been no apparent negative effect to the tank (nor any excess heavy metal levels based off a recent Triton test). It IS however important to regularly check any and all magnets for cracks and subsequent swelling and splitting. That’s not good!
