Just a reminder that as everyone eats and drinks there favorite items. Play your games and order your new equipment. That all of it is contributing to the huge global crisis. I post this in hoping it brings some more attention to the plastics floating around the world. I know in most countries there is no reall good recycle or waste management but down to the individual person we can create less waste and recycle. I know i am not a perfect human but i do my best to create less waste and recycle. I love this planet and would like it to be around for generations to come.

I could add the reason I brought up the carbon dioxide.
The plastic "pollution" is a very trendy problem to focus on these days. And it's a problem, for sure. But it's not going to eradicate ecosystems. And it's not that hard to do something about. And it's a lot easier to get than global warming and carbon dioxide.
So I think it's sad many institutions focus on this more "easy" problem instead of a global problem like the increase of CO2.

Say no to single use plastics! There are so many EASY solutions to this problem, such as reusable water bottles and grocery bags, if only we all just put in a tiny bit of effort... it’s sad that not only have we put an end to the plastic crisis we make it worse every day.

What will it take? For the most intelligent species ever to walk planet earth, we sure are smart when it comes to destroying and creating waste... wait, nvm, that’s stupid.

Something like %12 of recyclable material is actually recycled. Truth is many your recyclables are actually breaking down into micro waste, and some eventually making it back to you In the form of water, food, etc. Yum?

Hey if you’re trying at all, I applaud you. The fact that you care enough to try at all, is better than the alternative.

I have ceased to worry about it. The "eco" movement created a demand for biodegradable consumer items. These items got land filled instead of recycled. There they become CO2 and methane rather quickly. CO2 is kinda meh but methane is a strong green house gas.

But, but Ned we collect the methane and use it.
It gets burned and makes more CO2
The bomb has been planted and armed. The timer is counting down.

Did you ever notice that when you buy a tiny plastic doodad on Amazon it comes in a plastic bag that is inside another plastic bag inside a box with plastic foam holding it safe that is all wrapped in plastic.


You blame us older people but when we wanted something we went to a store, picked one off a shelf or out of a bin unpackaged or in a paper box and put it in a paper bag to take home. We saved the bag for later use. I used to take my lunch to school in those bags. Perhaps a small amount of paper got thrown away.

I would like to point that ZERO is an acceptable level of lead.
Buy a plastic water filter doodad.
After you use the filter I would like to point out you STILL have a glass of water with an acceptable level of lead in it.
And you can landfill the useless plastic pitcher filter thing later along with all the plastic bottles water comes in now.

How many of you are too scared to use a water fountain in a public place? Do they even still have them?

Lets be realistic, in my 35 years of Military Service I was involved in no less than 7 different conflicts from Vietnam to Afghanistan including covert operations in 130 different countries. During that time we used tens of Billions of gallons of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, we fired Billions of rounds of ammunition, artillery shells, dropped millions of tons of bombs, spread Depleted Uranium all over the middle east, left death, destruction and more waste than anyone can possibly imagine everywhere we went.

Plastic waste? Do you or anyone else really believe that other countries really worry about local or for that matter global pollution? Recycling is a wonderful idea but in reality it is a joke. People say "we have to do something" all the while ignoring the issue of global jihad, terrorism, poverty and that the U.S. is in a permanent state of war.

The reality is that there is nothing that any individual or group can do to make any real difference, vote for this person or party to your hearts content, what effect will your vote have on some poor slob in Africa, rural China, Indonesia or a hundred other places you could name? Think you or anyone else will stop the U.S. (global) Military Industrial Complex from waging war on anyone and everyone they can in order to make a profit?

Yes I agree the world as we know it has a problem but what if anything are you really going to accomplish but not using plastic straws, or recycling which as I said is a joke?

I'm in rural Missouri... a long, long way from an ocean. Even here, you go look over the creek that runs through my property, you'll find plastic trash of all kinds. Junk thrown out windows, blown in from roadsides, trash piles, etc. That creek runs into the Niangua river, to Lake Ozark, down the Osage, to the Missouri, eventually to the Mississippi, and out to sea. It might take decades for that candy bar wrapper you tossed out the window to make it, but eventually, it, or pulverized particles of it anyway, are going to end up in the Gulf.

Look, I don't want to start an argument.. but I'm in the group of people who believe that human induced global warming theories are based more on political agenda than on science. My point is... IT DOESN'T MATTER what I believe. Clean air and water are important, a healthy environment is important. It is undeniable that the state of our oceans have an immense impact on the health of the other 19% of this planet.

All is not lost. Life is incredibly adaptable. Yes, a big chunk of the great barrier reef is dead, or dying... but it's happened before. Several times. So far, it's always bounced back.

That's what I mean :) Plastic are visible, we all see it everywhere. Carbon dioxide is a bit more diffuse, harder to see a direct impact on our everyday life. That's why I think we need to inform more about it.

And to all who thinks global warming is natural or isn't real. What if it is a real thing and you could have done something? Wouldn't it have been nice to at least have tried, even with a smallest thing? :)

Of course. Just like pointing out Al Gore is very possibly a hypocrite might make you feel better but that's like saying well, this (theoretical) guy is a millionaire and doesn't donate anything to charity or donate anything for disaster relief efforts, so I am not going to either.

Well im over the pond in the uk and i like to think i do my bit for the environment, i recycle all my rubbish as does everyone here as we have multipul waste bins. Im also buying a hybrid plug in car that will run on electric 95% of the time and id also like to install solor panels at one point in the future... now do i think this will save the planet? Not alone i cant... if everyone did there bit even just basic recycling would the reefs of the world be able to recover? You bet they would...

Of course that is the problem. It took ~10,000 years to get to a billion people and only another 100 to approach 8 billion.

The problem comes from - How do you solve it? Governments, companies, corporations are all based on continual growth. That simply has to stop and is totally unsustainable, but it seems greed will not let it stop. Then of course you have people (mainly in the third world) who still feel the need to have a bunch of children for some reason, and no western government is going to touch a one or two child policy with a million mile long pole.

People want to believe that they are helping, that they are doing something, anything but in reality it is all to make them feel good about themselves. Yes steel, aluminum and most paper can be reused but the percentage is tiny compared to amount produced and in 3rd and other underdeveloped countries recycling is not even though about.

While I agree the great garbage patches of the oceans need to be cleaned up, who is going to pay for it?

As Margaret Thatcher said "The Problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money", sure you can include the price of cleaning up the pollution into the cost of the raw materials but what if a country like China (or anyone else) refuses to go along with the plan?

Taxes and fees harm those on the low end of the income spectrum not the wealthy. Put a tax on plastic to pay for the ocean's clean-up and you simply create another government bureaucracy which will grow and consume the money collected to feed itself. You will have nothing more than corruption and waste.

Not using a plastic shopping bag, straw or coffee stir stick is not fighting pollution it is a feel good measure to stroke a persons ego that they are doing something.
