I wanted to share a quick preview here! As I get closer to finishing, I’ll be starting a dedicated thread to document the build and share files for beta testers.
I’m currently building a custom Raspberry Pi application to control the tank. I know Reef-Pi already exists, and this isn’t meant to compete with or replace it. I just generally enjoy building apps to make my everyday life easier (I’m a giant nerd) and figured, why not build one for my reef? I’ve run an Apex for 8 years now and used to have a very involved setup. While I loved that aspect of the hobby, I didn't love the premium price tags, the proprietary lock-in, and the inability to implement custom features. I figured it was time to just create my own.
I’ve been working on it for the past month and am getting very close to beta testing. As of right now, I can ping my Apex, control all outlets, and monitor all readings (Trident, probes, voltage, etc.). The app also allows for custom programming that interfaces directly with the Apex backend.
My favorite part is that I’ve already integrated and tested reverse-engineered drivers for Kasa, Shelly, and Jebao devices. This means you can buy a 6-outlet Kasa power strip for $39.99 and get full control and power monitoring for every single outlet. You can use individual 15A Kasa smart plugs, or wire in Shelly relays like the Plus 1PM to control a circuit and monitor its voltage. I also have Jebao WiFi wavemakers running on it, fully connected and controlled straight from the app.
The ultimate goal was a fully controllable, non-proprietary system that lets me use whatever hardware I want. The best part is there are literally no hardwired connections (yet). You just plug the device in, the app connects over WiFi, and I can have my existing Apex controlling Kasa outlets etc if I want.
So far, it’s looking promising. Once it's a bit more dialed in, I’ll start a thread to share more details, gather ideas, and hoping to get some feedback.
