JUMPING around?

We all acquire fish and build our collection and suddenly one or even two fish are missing. Often we forget the potential for fish to jump. There are some popular jumpers in this hobby such as dart fish, firefish gobies, in fact many gobies, at times clown fish, anthias fish and of course eels. In some cases , some merely slip through the overflow boxes and appear to be gone and are swimming in the overflow or take the journey through the drain pipe and end up in the sump. Snails even escape from the top.

What fish have been your jumpers and where did you find them?
How have you safeguarded to prevent a reoccurrence?

Mine have been both dartfish and firefish gobies as well as a recent snowflake clown. I have screens on the way as I relied on my canopy to prevent escape from tank. I in the past had a couple of hermit crabs even find their way out.

Made a screen with brs mesh for my new 40 breeder because I had a sixline jump out in my last tank 7 years ago. Landed directly on top of the screen I had on it and got snagged. The screen had too large holes in it. Never again

My firefish jumped with a lid on. Many on R2R have mentioned fish escaping with screened lids and are baffled but some find their way out

Think the only fish that could fit through my lid is my black tail wrasse but she's happy and no 1 bullys her

Seconds after I removed the lid at feeding time my female japanese swallowtail wanted to be first to eat. She cleared the top by 3 inches right in front of me. Landed on her side on the carpet two feet from the tank about 4 1/2 feet down. I picked her up and returned her to the tank. She just went right back to eating, like nothing ever happened.

Ocellaris clownfish. It jumped out of the tank overnight...found it dead on the carpet the next morning. There was a lid on the tank too. It must have jumped out through the cut out opening for the HOB. :crying-face:

Some unexpected jumpers are lionfish, yes lionfish. The fuzzy is notorious but I have also found a fu manchu in the overflow. Many or most scorps will just zoom right over the side, so be aware if you plan on a lion, scorp, or wasp; which are all in the same family.

Here is a tip for your overflows. You can find this black plastic mesh sheets for embroidery on Amazon, cut to fit the top of the overflow and hold in place with a couple of drops of superglue.

I have mesh on my overflow and have found an aptasia but asterina stars stuck to it for easy removal and it blocks small snails also

Diamond goby I went through three till I realized this fish was just not meant for me so my fix stopped buying them they always found the littlest crack

I have a tiny feed port in my screen near the front. And my old mccoskers jumped through it 3x in a hour.

Diamond goby, clownfish and foxface in the past. I have an octoaquatics lid on my current tank.

Had a butterfly, 6 line wrasse, clown, file fish and red dragonets.
Of them only lost the butterfly and dragonette

Realized my 1 lyretail anthias is missing. I have the kraken reef lid on my waterbox but I leave the feeding cap off alot whoops. Wish I knew if it was the snails or my dog that ate him.

What would you tell others , was the level of difficulty with this DIY screen kit in making a proper size screen?

I made my screen top ..not hard but I trashed the first attempt. I also designed a few pieces to fit around my light brackets and feeder that makes the top very secure.

My Blue spot jawfish years ago found the sliver of a opening that I made for the screen to go around my light arms . I found him after tile surfing the next morning . Most recently about six months ago I took my lid off to siphon my sand bed and I had a wardi goby decide to grab some altitude and fortunately he landed back in the tank with no issues . Think he was practicing for a upcoming sea world show . As far as difficulty making the dyi kit I personally didn’t care to for the dyi part . I found it to be tedious making the measurements and getting the cuts perfect around the light holder stands . Maybe if it was just a big rectangle it wouldn’t have been to bad but I did it . Next time I’ll hire someone to do it , life is short . But I will tell you the screen has been a life saver . A couple of weeks ago I was messing with my light schedule and if not for the screen I would have had a spooked foxface hit the floor.

Oh wow… I had no idea lions were jumpers! My little one will sit near the food opening in my tank (has a 3D printed grate over it) but now Im paranoid about her jumping! Mine is a red sea max, so “sump” is in the back with a large wall plus my lid. Never had a fish jump, but I have had them jump from my acclimation containers!!
