Kenya tree

I've heard kenya trees are picky about environment. Had this one for a few weeks, every day he opens and closes but hasn't opened in 3 days. Not slimy or anything but can't tell if he's dying, or dead. I've read some people say they'll stay closed up for days at a time tho. That true?

Not sure. I have Kenya trees but haven't experienced that.

They can stay closed up for days at a time and be OK, but it's a bit of a concern IMO if they're ever not happy given how insanely tough they are. I would not categorize Kenya trees as fussy or picky.

For example I have some in 3 gal of water in a 5 bucket that I meant to throw out or give away but haven't been organized enough to do anything. Just has an airline, old underpowered heater, and one of those $10 clip-on usb grow lights i had around. And it's been happy for months lol.

Check light if it's a deep tank, FOWLR lights will do in a ~12" water depth but not if it's a 24". Or flow, they do want flow (although again, I have a single airline running an airlift in a 5gal bucket, polyps baaaaarely moving and they're not peak happiness but look happier than your photo). I would be shocked if you could have nutrients high enough or wonky enough ph/alkalinity to mess with it.

They are tough and not finicky at all. How much flow are you giving it? Whenever mine aren’t standing up and opening the first thing I try is adding lots of flow. They love flow!

These corals did the best in my tank with neglect, just like dansyr said. Plant and forget, and they will take over....

I can just be tank cleaning and brush my large toadstool, and it will be made for 1-2 days easily. Then HEY, here I am again, back in full glory :)

I can just be tank cleaning and brush my large toadstool, and it will be made for 1-2 days easily. Then HEY, here I am again, back in full glory :)

I would move it to more flow then. If flow is weak it will not be happy there.

I moved the powerheads and little, I'll check him out tomorrow. Normally he opens up pretty quik. Others have said he could be shedding to grow and that could take a week. No idea what they look like when they're dying either so.

They will be "de'flated" if they are starting to die....
They like indirect flow.

At least mine do.....

Ok cool, i won't worry too much for the moment.

Note that BryanM is talking about toadstools (Sarcophyton), which tend to take slightly longer to come back after being bumped than Kenya trees (Capnella) which when happy re-open after like 1-5 minutes. Similarly, i've never seen my Kenya trees shed, although some of my toadstools do.
