@Randy Holmes-Farley

Hi Randy, I have been dosing lanthanum chloride into 10um sock for awhile follow your suggestions on previous post. But cleaning the 10um sock every 2/3 days is not fun . Today I am dosing it into the bottom of the refugium (I have a tube go down to the bottom of the refugium) , the refugium has a full bed of chaeto ( 12”x12” and 8” thick), I don’t see any white cloudy water on top of the refugium or reaction from the fish (including all the wrasse and the yellow tang). My question is, eventually, what happens to the bi-product of lanthanum chloride and phosphate at the bottom of the refugium overtime, I assume the 10um sock normally catch all of this bi-product. Thanks

Note: I used to dilute the SeaKlear phosphate removal, but for last couple months, I have been dosing 3 drops of undiluted seaklear phosphate removal directly into the 10um sock and everything is fine. So this morning, I drop 3 drops directly into the tube that will get the LC to the bottom of the refugium, Thanks

The solids will settle out or be somehow removed elsewhere. Some folks dose into a skimmer. Richard Ross does that.

The settled solids likely won’t redissolve.

But I do not know the best way to protect fish.

Thank you Randy! I used to dose into the skimmer, but it make the skimmer going crazy and I have to temporarily adjust the valve.

If the solid(I assume that is the stuff that my 10um sock filter it out) is not redissolve , then I assume once in a while, I just need to remove the water at the bottom of the refugium, then I am okay right? It’s not likes carbon dosing, I have to have the skimmer running otherwise the nitrate will just release back into the water .

I actually have a lot pvc pipes with a lot of holes that connect together in the bottom of my refugium , I use that to remove the detritus build up in the refugium when I do water change, so I hope that would also remove the solids from lanthanum chloride dosing. Thanks

Lanthanum is an unexpectedly complicated topic, especially as it relates to tangs, and what causes issues in a few cases and not in others.

I would not assume that lanthanum phosphate that has precipitated must be removed, except if it is the causative agent in tang issues.

I do not know the rating on the filter rolls used in my Reef Factory Roller Filter but I dose into the chamber the rolls go around now.

OP - you can always clip on a 5 or 10 micron filter sock just before the skimmer intake and slowly drip it into that. That is often another way it is done. There are a few posts here and on other forums that discuss it into more detail if interested. Also some dilute it then drip that solution into the sock over hours. It really comes down to the product or DIY recipe on how it is administered.

Yeah, I was dosing into a 10um sock, but I hate cleaning sock. Looks like dosing into the bottom of the refugium works fine . Thanks

I just dose it into a filter sock but only half dose at a time.
I try that, but looks like I can see the LC is go right through the sock, because I see the water cloudy up around the sock. Thanks

Yea mine does that but just filters out in the sump chamber. I've been using LC for 2 years like this with no issues.

I completely understand the sock thing. Not a huge fan of it either. Hope your day is well.

Hello! I dose LC into a skimmer and it’s turning the acrylic opaque. Is there a way to clean the skimmer of that? Tia

An acid rinse will likely dissolve it. I'd treat it as if it were calcium carbonate deposits.

I use the sponge that people use to clean the dish, the green side can scrub it off, but just to warn you, it leave a fine scratch on the skimmer cup. Maybe someone else have a better solution. Anyway, I stop dosing into the skimmer and dose it into the bottom of my refugium

I had very good results dosing in to a 1 micron filter sock, and I have a hippo tang, which never showed signs of distress

Same here, but I hate cleaning the sock, especially 1um sock, it’s clogging a lot faster after the first use. Had been dosing into the refugium since this post and all tangs and wrasse are happy :). Thanks

Heh, I never cleaned the sock, I just replaced it.

I felt safer with the 1 micron filter sock though.
