Where does everyone buy these large aquariums I keep seeing? I'm not buying rn, maybe in 5 years or something, but do all these people spend 5-6k just on the tank and stand or is there a place people buy it for like 1k it seems like alot of people have these tanks too. I'm talking about 250+

Yes people are spending that on large tanks if they are new. People are spending over this on smaller tanks. Most tanks over 200 gallons are custom and custom means $$$.

Just depends. Some people are buying custom tanks from reputable people, others are buying name brand tanks. Tanks over 250g do get expensive, unless you are buying secondhand!

I found 2 240 tanks for 200 dollars. Is that a good deal, all I need to do I hire a moving company to move the tanks. This would be sick to do 1 fresh and 1 salt. I also have 2 75s sitting around empty from petcos 50% off. I got the for 72 dollars each. They would be perfect sumps.

Me personally would not buy used on a tank of this size. Too risky. Especially 100.00 each. Unless it was from a friend that was just giving you a great deal and you know the history of the tanks. I am putting together a used reef ready 4ft 120 that I resealed and completely went through the stand reinforcing it. I paid 400.00 because it was in such good shape.

Is there a forum for people leaving the hobby where you can get cheap tanks, I'm under 18 so I can't go on fb market place. I have ebay so that's where I bought my 125. I'm happy with my 125 but I really like this hobby and am learning alot so I would like to be on the look out for a while until a good opportunity comes.

Yah the tank and stand are the cheap part even at a few thousand dollars.


It’s the livestock, lights, filtration, and ongoing salt/dosing/electricity that will drain ya :)

You can buy used but if it leaks/bursts… that may be 10s of thousands in damages.

That may be your parents problem though.

You can look at FB, OfferUp, or forums like R2R. For large tanks (300+) be prepared to find a mean to relocate the tank/setup. It’s ok when dealing with acrylics but glass is a different can of worms. Good luck!

I'm only allowed to keep fish tanks in the basement, and it's furnished with nice tiles do it doesn't matter because you can just mop it up without damage to the floor. I don't pay for utilizes. In my other posts I also was told not to worry about dosing. And for filtration just don't go with major brands, I went with highly rated protien skimmers and wave makers that work really well. I'm just glad I got the lights with the tank. Also for a month of water changes it cost 20 dollars of salt which isn't to bad. I like to feed heavy so I pay about 100 bucks a month for all my tanks and pond. The fish arent to bad either honestly, i found an online seller that gives money back, qts, and is cheaper that live aquaria or lfs. The only thing that will suck is being addicted to this hobby for the rest of my life.

My dad has an f250 longbed I think it's 8ft by 4 or maybe 6. I have no clue.

I mean it’s bad when the entire tank dies in 48 hours form velvet.


You only have 3 fish and no corals yet so it will be a bit different once you move forward. I hope that you don’t get disease though.

I think that much water if it failed would fill up the floor and damage the walls but basement is good.

A 125g is 340 lbs so the weight increase is significant.

It all adds up fast. Even buying dry rock and sand for a 240g.

240 lbs of the cheap reef saver dry rock (on sale) is over $700

Last time a tank leaked I just used a shop vac and a industrial fan, after that I'm guessing you can mop away all the left over salt.

I moved a few tanks up and down stairs and @Tamberav is right is saying it is difficult. A 6ft+ tank won’t fit around most tight turns and it’s tall and heavy to maneuver down narrow stairs. I’ve seen people remove windows and slide them in through there however you are still dealing with at least 600/700lbs if not more.
It is also very difficult to grip and hold a tank without professional grade equipment
Not saying it’s impossible, just as someone who’s always had an “I can do it myself” attitude. Up and down stairs is one please I usually get some professional help
