I figured I would put a build thread up, but not for the tank ;)

It looks like there are a few guys one here that share a love of art ant tattoo's, so I thought I would add my backpiece that is a work in progress.

Post yours in here or on a new thread. I love checking out other people's work. Especially bigger pieces that take a while to get finished.

Right now I go ~ once a month. Tom's booked out for 2-3 months in advance, so I have a pretty much standing appt. which makes it nice.

It has some background if you want to read how it came to fruition, or pictures for those like me that don't always like to read everything!

Background

This is what I talked to Tom Beasley about and developed off this idea.

Arabian Phoenix rising from the ashes (death every 500 years - then rebirth -/- the equality relating to my addiction - and rising from it)
The claws are big and forward since they will be tearing the skin to reveal a Harley bar & shield that is made to look like stone from a tomb (still working on this idea - I think we are going with Chrome now with the reflection of the fire in it) with 3 skulls smoked into the torn flesh that represent Cerberus (below is the history - I read it in Virgil's Aenid - and Homer's Illiad. There is also a reference to them being - sloth/gluttony and something else - or the Past, Present and Future - (hence the death of addiction)
In the background above the Phoenix is going to be clouds, with a reference of green and blue stained glass (for the stained glass I saw when I died-and obviously was brought back) - this was worked in a little different already.

So far so good.

I'm always open to suggestions - especially with this many people looking at it! Its always nice to get some ideas for stuff that I CAN add, alter or design elements that can be added.
What is there, is there as you can see. :)

After the first sitting I had him change that doodly-doo on the Phoenix's head to a flame, and and change the Phoenix's face to be a little more menacing. He'll color in the eye and do a bunch of other finishing touches when it is closer to completion, so it will go with the overall look of the piece.

1st Sitting

As you can see from the final picture, we just got done adding the outline for the HD Bar & Shield with the skin rips/tears. He's going to add the trauma marks, color, and start on the 3 skulls in the next sitting. The HD B&S is going to be chrome, so that'll be cool to see how he adds the reflection of the flames in it.

7 hours yesterday. It was a long day! Not to mention after ~4 hours he started the outlining. That sucked since it is in an area that hurts like he%% and it is thick outline on the outside to give it depth.

I am totally stoked now on it. It was hard in the beginning since he can't add the final touches, and is just trying to get ink down since it is such a large piece. I am so happy with the work now and can see where its going.
It is unreal the amount of detail he puts into it.

looks great. not a huge fan of the peace sign part but i still like it all as a whole qutie a bit.
he does nice shading work. you MIGHT want to consider having him break that Straight line up on the top somehow. seems odd for it to just stop blunt like that,
cant wait to see it finished

LOL - Yeah the flaming peace sign was something I got 15 years ago. I drew that all the time in high school and growing up, so I got it when I was 18. It has been added to since, with different parts of my life, ie. getting out of the military, mom dying, ect.
I'll probably get him to work on it when this piece is done.

He'll blend them together, fix the flames, and the color in the flames too since it is all jacked up from a crappy artist I went to a few years back.

I thought so too on the top part, but once its done I'll get a better idea of whether I like it or not. He said it will look a lot cleaner - cause I said the same thing as you - it looks odd.....

Great piece. I look forward to wacthing it unfold.

EliteReefs: I think the peace sign was an older tattoo and he is building around it. I'm certian that it is impossible to cover up. As for the line...it end like that so when he wears a shirt you won't see it sticking out of the coller. {{Am I correct??}}

Again, great coloring! I love tattoos with a story behind it - thats how they all should be. You can tell it wasn't one of those..."oh I like this, maybe I should get that (selecting one off the wall)"

didnt know you ride ill get pics of my tat in progress later today,i have a 2002 custom deuce and a anniversary edition heritage.

No back piece, but I have the crest from the Slovak flag on my right upper arm reflecting my heritage. Love the phoenix. I've thought about getting one myself.

Yeah - that is part of it too. With being in sales and business in the corporate sector, I don't want it to go up too far.
It can still be brought up and feathered out. I'm leaving it up to Tom till we get further in the piece.
Right now I am liking how it stops like that, with the envision of how he is going to finish the bottom part around the HD symbol and the 3 skulls coming out.

Its only ~ 12 hours actual ink time in. So i've still got another 15 at least to go.
So its far from done, and kind of hard to see where it will end up. I have seen his finished full backpieces, and they are out of this world. So I am leaving a lot of disgretion up to him. Plus when you are in the chair for hours at a time, he gets a good feeling for what you want, what you are like - ie. lifestyle wise, ect. and tailors it to the person and personality.

Kurbs - Yeah I always have liked to hear the stories behind the work. It took me ~ 5 years to settle on this design and get together the right elements.
The Phoenix and its history I learned through the MC I am prospecting with. So once I had that in hand, it was a done deal and I went to finding the best artist out there.

Love everything except Harley Davidson Advertisement on your back. I hope they are paying you for getting their name on your back.

Yeah - pictures of my scoot are in my photobucket - I built it myself, little by little off of ebay, craigslist, ect. I have about 20k on it now. I ride a little.....;)

Here's one that I had taken for a magazine shoot they wanted me to send it. I never got around to it though. I might send them in this winter.

This is the club I am prospecting with. The front page should have the description of the Phoenix on it.

Thanks - I have thought about a family crest too, but want to stick to just my back. For now at least

man I hate seeing people do that. i'm always thinking "That is going to be there forever, dont you want something personal about it?"

I only have two tats and they are not anything with meaning but atleast they are somthing i had my wife draw up.

I used to think that. To each his or her own though. Its one of those things where some people get it for other people, and some get them for themselves.
I think its just more of a personal preference thing. Some people don't really have any idea about what they want and see something on the wall that fits them at the time, and they get it.
I think that is what the hardest thing is, is that it really doesn't have meaning, except for at the time, then that fades along with the tat.
I have a few buddies that love their's to death still, and a few that hate them (wall picked ones)

To each their own.
<editted for content> lol

I don't walk around with my shirt off advertising anything - just like anything else in life, its a personal thing.
I have ridden all my life - didn't get a car till I was 21, and have only had 3.
One thing will never change....... I will ride till the end.....

One of those, if I had to explain...

Sweet bike BTW.

Thanks - It likes to get ridden. :xd:

LOL - I had a LOT going on - like a rear wheel doing 130mph - I was shifting into 5th there. :) It definitely is one of those things that is easy till you do it.
The noise and the smoke was loud enough that it brought some guys over from the island across the way - Assateague :xd:
And I only got 2nd in the burnout contest!!! lol
I was just a "hang around" so they gave it to a Bird (Full patched member)

It was fun as h.... I had been wanting to do a nice big one for a while, but never wanted to just burn off the tire for no reason. I needed a new one prior to this trip since I was leaving for Canada like 3 days later (back in July) So it worked out perfect.

Zoalover - good times on the inside of the arm huh! He hit a couple spots yesterday that woke me up. I told him he needs to get some oh crap handles on the table.
+1 on the bigger picture - that'd be nice to see. It looks pretty detailed.

Nice tat bro!!! I have a cross on my arm with the italian flag in it, above it it says isaiah 4:10, its in memory of my grandfather
