Good evening guys,

So I plan on starting a phytoplankton culture and I had a question about what light to use. I attached the picture of the one I'm thinking about using. Do you guys think it will be strong enough?

Thanks in advance.

I had that light over my refiugium and it burned out after about two weeks. I would recommend this grow light. Also if it dose not give a par rating I would not buy it.

For phytoplankton do you think the 75W be enough or would I need the 150W?

Depends on the phyto. Look up you desired phyto plankton and how much par it needs

The size light that you need is relative to your situation. Depending on your culture system, 75W could be too much because of temperature gain. The first picture is with a PAR 38 15W grow light with a red:blue ratio of 4:1. The second culture vessel used a 16’ 72W led strip. As I experimented with operation over several days, I found heat gain of water was unexceptionable into the 90 degree range. I first removed half of light string and a second test proved too hot with reduction to 6’ of light string at 17W and 85 degrees. Whoever said to look up PAR requirement for specific strain of phytoplankton is full of himself. I would like to see that link to this research. Phytoplankton is driven by light & temperature. Phyto will grow at reduced light & temperature but slower. Rate of growth will increase with light & temperature within limits. More light does not necessarily mean more production.

touche.
You can grow the stuff with just about any light. Florescent or Led. I use a screw in led grow light from the H...PO People even grow it in the window with sunlight.

This should work for phytoplankton, but it depends on the strain as some do not like too much light. I'm guessing you are growing Nannochloropsis?

Any grow light spectrum or white light will work. Some maybe a little better than others but we are talking about basic life forms. They will reproduce pretty well with anything under 10k.
