I am looking forward to purchase new LED for my newly built reef tank. Tank dimension is 48"x 22"x21" (L*W*H). My plan is to make a mixed reef tank with LPS & Soft Coral and one or two easy growing SPS in future. these are few of the LED's I found interesting -

  • Maxspect Jump LED Blue L165 (2 Nos) - easily fits my budget. Good review all around. As per their sites recommendation 2 will be sufficient for my tank. However I am not sure if blue version will be a good option for me or all the livestock except the fluorescent ones will look odd.
  • AI Prime 16HD (2 nos) - Most popular in this price bracket. BRS and few others gave good review. However according to chatgpt MJL165 is better in terms of PAR, spectrum, spread, build etc.
  • Maxspect Razor X200w - Pricy. Highest PAR among these. Sleek design, on board controller but found some mixed review about its durability.
I am new to this hobby so please help me choose from these LED's or if you have any other suggestion feel free to advice.

looks amazing. however 4 of these will be out of my budget. my budget is around 600$. I would have to pay around 1000$ here in my country to get these.

check out the noopsyche k7 pros
I checked the noopsyche k7 pros III. it has promising PAR and spectrum. But its a headache to buy these from China. Aliexpress is a option but I have heard horror story about their shipment. also I am not sure about their durability in the long run.

They were expensive for me too. I started with one, then bought second one and then two more.

I am only using them at 45% now (slowly ramping up).

You may want to check out the Micmol line of lights.

There is probably 1/2 doz. or so China direct lights/ brands to choose from

Keep in mind the Chinese new year and it's impact on getting things from China

orphek is exceeding my budget. Also is it better than the options I have mentioned?
LED bars will give you better coverage, but not the control of modules.

Orpheks have good spectrum if you mix in a daylight bar. They are good at coloring up coral, but the lense angle is narrow and they need to be mounted high.

I second the suggestion that you don’t necessarily have to buy all of your lights at once.

I just put some Smatfarm G5 lights on my 150. liking them so far, but haven't had them super long. 3 ran me less than $500. As with anything, I'm expecting only to get what I paid for out of them
